Andy Capp Handicap - discontinued Redcar race, named for the comic strip character in the Daily Mirror and once the richest 3-y-o handicap in the North.
Gunner B won the race in 1976 before going on to take the Eclipse two years later. |

Emigrant - 1857 Grand National winner.
The race was run in a downpour and events on the track were largely obscured to the spectators. Jockey Charlie Boyce took the horse along the canal towpath on the second circuit to avoid the inconvenience of actually jumping any fences. The manoeuvre was pretty much acknowledged by all concerned nevertheless the result remained unchanged. |

Lupe - 1970 Oaks winner.
From 1972-2006 Goodwood staged an Oaks Trial at its May meeting (sorry - Festival) named after Lupe even though the horse never raced there. In 2007 the contest was renamed the Height of Fashion Stakes after a filly that did run at Goodwood winning the Lupe Stakes in 1982. |
