Phillips, Richard - trains a stone's throw from where I live at Adlestrop in Gloucestershire.

Hasn't really fulfilled the promise he showed when he had horses like Cheltenham Festival winner La Landiere in his yard about 10 years back.

Zara Phillips (no relation, probably) rides out for him from time to time.

Also, Richard Phillips is apparently an excellent mimic and does a mean impression of Henry Cecil.

Yes I remember the promise of Richard Phillips as I can understand the connection with Zara Phillips. Richard was, along with Alan King, one of David Nicholson's assistants who became a fully fledged trainer when Nicholson's career ended; I think there was another but can't recall who. Interestingly, Richard Johnson, another of the Nicholson camp, sometimes rides for Phillips and it was Johnson who once courted Zara. No doubt the connection began as a result of the close friendship of Princess Anne and Nicholson, the latter having taught her to race-ride and for whom Anne rode out and competed a few times.

Salisbury where Lester Piggott rode for the first time in public and Steve Cauthen made his riding debut in Britain. Racing has been held there sine the mid-1600s and the likes of Gimcrack, Eclipse, Sun Chariot, Mill Reef and Brigadier Gerard have won there.

Wise Owl - 1968 US colt by Hoot Owl out of Blue Whirl.

The name plays on the stereotypical wisdom of the bird but, while I've never seen a totally stupid owl, I have to say that not all of them are as smart as they are made out to be.

All Along - 1983 Arc winner turned down by Lester Piggott.

Piggott's refusal to take the ride cost him not only a big race winner but resulted in the termination of his riding arrangement with Daniel Wildenstein.

This in turn caused a split between Lester and Henry Cecil for whom Steve Cauthen began to ride the following year.

Kalanisi. Stoute trained top class 8-12 furlong colt unraced until a 3yo and never out of the first 3 in 11 starts. In 2000 he was twice beaten a head by Giants Causeway in the Eclipse and the Juddmonte International and then went on to beat Montjeu in the Champion Stakes and win the Breeders Cup Turf.
