The Leamington Steeplechase was first run in 1835. It was a prestigious event at the time ranking not too far behind the Grand National in importance.

Here is a painting of the field going over the water jump in the 1837 race. It's one of a series of four by artist Francis Calcraft Turner.

I'm wondering if water jumps back then really were as wide as the Rio Grande or whether the artist just got his perspective wrong.
