Agoraphobic - 2007 New Zealand colt by Zabeel.

(Agoraphobia being a pathological fear of wide-open spaces I'm guessing this animal was useless.)

Quote:
“Sharp Hat - sprinter trained by David Chapman until its retirement 6 years ago at the age of 13.

The horse ran 217 times in 12 seasons (winning 24 races) which is probably a record number of career starts for a horse trained in Britain.”

Dvinsky - 11-y-o gelding trained by Paul Howling. Known as Dave in the yard. Winner of 19 races over 10 years at 6f-8f.

Dave broke Sharp Hat's record when racing for the 218th time (finishing a slightly disappointing 9th of 11) at Wolverhampton on 21 September.

First Gold - won the 2000 King George VI Chase following which he was bought by JP McManus for a reported £500,000.

Successful in the Martell Cognac Gold Cup (currently the Betfred Bowl) at Liverpool in 2001 & 2003 and victorious in the Punchestown Gold Cup also in 2003.

Disappointing thereafter with no wins from 15 further races until retirement in 2006, failing to complete the course in his last 4.

Ipswich: Weighing - print of an illustration by Henry Alken.

There was racing at Ipswich between 1710 & 1911 on an area of land between the Felixstowe & Nacton roads. The date of the print is probably somewhere between 1816 & 1831.

Alken produced many sporting prints, 150 of which can be found here.

King Edward VIII (while Prince of Wales) takes the Welsh Guards' Race on his own horse Degomme at Beaufort Point to Point in 1928.

The 2 minute footage is from Pathé News. There's no sound. And there's not much of the race, either.

Maher Daniel. US born jockey in 1881 who was amongst the first to be included in the US Racing Hall of Fame in 1955 and was champion jockey in the UK in 1908 and 1913. He died of consumption in 1916 aged only 35.

Like a number of US jockeys he left the US for Europe due to anti-gambling and other restrictions on racing at the end of the 19th C and became a British citizen in 1913. He won all of the English classics including 3 Derbys and with Piggott and Richards has the highest number of wins, six, in the Middle Park Stakes. He had a win ratio of over 25% from over 6,000 rides in the US and over 5,000 in the UK.

Despite these problems Valenzuela has ridden over 4,000 winners to date the best of which would be Sunday Silence, winner of the Kentucky Derby & Preakness Stakes in 1989, and Arazi which he rode to a mind-blowing victory in the 1991 Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
