AraZi - here is a video (2:08) of the 1991 Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Arazi is the 11 horse coming out of stall 14.
At 1:00 he can be seen starting his run from last place but one. Bertrando was a future US Champion. |

Breeders' Cup Classic 1993 - won by the Andre Fabre trained Arcangues who collared Bertrando 100 yards out and so delivered a major surprise to the punting fraternity.
The horse caused the biggest upset in Breeders' Cup history paying $269.20 for a $2 stake. |

Elliott Charlie, champion jockey in 1923 and 1924 while still an apprentice, contemporary of Gordon Richards and matched him with 14 English Classic winners. He frequently rode in France for owner/breeder Marcel Boussac and subsequently trained there with a good deal of success.

Juvenile - a two year old horse.
The word comes from the Latin juvenilis which means 'of or belonging to youth'. |

Loser - 2004 German colt by Johan Cruyff whose own sire was Danehill.
Perhaps luckily for the horse's self-esteem he never appeared on a racecourse. |

Nock, Susan - formerly trained at Icomb near Stow but now retired.
Never had more than half a dozen horses and maintained a low profile until Seņor El Betrutti came along and won the Paddy Power Gold Cup at 33/1 in 1997. The horse followed up by taking the Tripleprint Gold Cup a few weeks later. |

Over at the knee. Also known as goat knees where the knee in a horse is inclined forwards and is a significant impediment to a racehorse. Ormonde was born with the condition and initially was considered to be of no use as a racehorse but although he suffered from problems with his knees they did straighten sufficently for him to become one of the greatest horses of all time.

Psidium - 1961 Derby winner at 66/1. Owned by the previously mentioned and much married Etti Plesch.
Etti named all her horses after flowers (her other Derby winner was Henbit in 1980) Psidium being another name for the Guava flower. |

Tristan, the only horse to win the Champion Stakes 3 times in 1882, 3 and 4. He raced for 5 seasons but only really came into his own from his 4yo season on and won 27 races out of 51 starts over distances from 6f to 2.5 miles including the July Cup and the Ascot Gold Cup. At Royal Ascot in 1882 he ran and won 3 times at distances of 1 mile, 1.5 miles and 2 miles. He had a dangerous and unpredictable temperament and was described as "a very vile-tempered animal" which his trainer blamed on being mistreated as a yearling.
