Scott Jeremy whose runner Webberys Dream in today's Haldon Gold Cup has a mountain to climb as his official rating should mean the top rated horse giving him 31lbs and the second lowest rated horse in the race giving him 12lbs but as the race is a limited handicap he only gets 20lbs and 1lb respectively.

Yeovil - I'm not sure there was ever a racecourse at Yeovil but there was one 10m SW of there at Crewkerne.

In the town centre at Crewkerne there's a mural depicting 1866 Grand National winner Salamander who suffered a fatal injury at the track later the same year.

(I think I'd better acknowledge once more that most of my information concerning defunct racecourses comes from Chris Pitt's excellent work A Long Time Gone.)

Inglis Drever. A well bred horse originally trained by Sir Mark Prescott on the flat he became the best long distance hurdler of his day winning the World Hurdle in 2005,7 and 8 and was only denied a victory in 2006 when injury prevented him from running. Injury forced his retirement in 2009 and sadly he was put down in 2010 aged 10 after contracting collic.

Kipper - nickname for lightweight jockey John Lynch whose career in the saddle lasted from 1956 to 1980.

The name was allegedly bestowed upon him when someone unkindly pointed out that he walked like a fish.

(A video of Lynch walking about is unavailable. So is footage of a walking kipper.)
