Jackpot, Tote - won by a Devon punter who correctly predicted the winners of all six races at Exeter on 8 March 2011.

The dividend came to £1,445,671.71 which is the biggest single Tote Jackpot payout in the history of the bet.

The largest ever win pool occurred at Newmarket on 23 September last year when it amounted to circa £2.9m but this had to be shared among 125 winning units.

Blimey, I've heard of blinkers but you'd think the horse had wing mirrors.

Northern Dancer, Slim Shadey's great, great grandsire on both sides of his pedigree.

Pitt, Arthur - for what it is worth in 1982 he still had 27 horses in training including a good hurdler called Freight Forwarder.

If he got down to one horse it was clearly later than that but details are thin on the ground. Pitt's previous achievements included the 1970 Irish Sweeps Hurdle with Persian War, the 1973 Stayers' Hurdle with Moyne Royal and the 1974 Cesarewitch with Ocean King (Tommy Carter up).

If I recall correctly one of his owners was Oliver Reed. Celebrations following a Reed winner must have been interesting.

It could have been later than 1982 or it could be me having got mixed up; certainly Ian Cox was the jockey and I think he'd barely finished his apprenticeship. Apart from Ocean King which I wouldn't have remembered without your prompt, I recall all the others, notably of course Persian War, perhaps better owned could have become an even greater horse than he proved to be.....and to think that Alper then went on to make money from a book about him.

^ Henry Alper has been the subject of a couple of posts on this thread, neither of which were complimentary.

Persian War was a truly great hurdler who certainly won 3 Champion Hurdles despite his owner's interference rather than because of it.

One of the sights I hate to see in horse racing is a former champion running round the gaff tracks in pursuit of loose change. Such horses should be cherished by their owners and not exploited.

Randall, John - columnist & statistician for the Racing Post who in November 2000 won £500,000 on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

The totally random qualifying question that got him on the show was, 'What is the distance of the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe'.

It's been announced today that he's late entered Wrotham Heath and four others on the Irish Derby. Oddly, Frankel was entered a while back and is still in there at 33/1.

I think you are teasing us, what with the Frankel in question being a dog and his entry being for the Irish Greyhound Derby.

Duller, George - specialist hurdles rider whose golden decade was the 1920s.

Between 1920 & 1927 Duller maintained an average strike rate of 27%, peaking in 1922 when riding 97 winners from 239 races at a scarcely credible 40%.
