If he got down to one horse it was clearly later than that but details are thin on the ground. Pitt's previous achievements included the 1970 Irish Sweeps Hurdle with Persian War, the 1973 Stayers' Hurdle with Moyne Royal and the 1974 Cesarewitch with Ocean King (Tommy Carter up).

If I recall correctly one of his owners was Oliver Reed. Celebrations following a Reed winner must have been interesting.

It could have been later than 1982 or it could be me having got mixed up; certainly Ian Cox was the jockey and I think he'd barely finished his apprenticeship. Apart from Ocean King which I wouldn't have remembered without your prompt, I recall all the others, notably of course Persian War, perhaps better owned could have become an even greater horse than he proved to be.....and to think that Alper then went on to make money from a book about him.

Persian War was a truly great hurdler who certainly won 3 Champion Hurdles despite his owner's interference rather than because of it.

One of the sights I hate to see in horse racing is a former champion running round the gaff tracks in pursuit of loose change. Such horses should be cherished by their owners and not exploited.
