Ogden, Harry - widely considered to be the first bookmaker in the country.
He was apparently the first man to offer prices on all horses in the same race at a Newmarket meeting circa 1794. |

Westwood, Lee - 5 shots off the lead in the US Masters as we speak.
Co-owner with his manager Chubby Chandler and trainer Peter Easterby of last year's Stewards' Cup winner Hoof It. (The horse carried 10st to victory, 4lb more than any other winner in the history of the race.) |

Ogden, Harry - widely considered to be the first bookmaker in the country. Betting Post - before Harry and his ilk arrived on the scene this was the go-to place for a bet on the racecourse. He was apparently the first man to offer prices on all horses in the same race at a Newmarket meeting circa 1794. When you liked a horse's chance and wanted to back it, or didn't like it and wished to lay it, you'd go to the betting post and invariably there would be someone happy to accommodate you. It's taken over 200 years but the wheel has finally turned full circle with the advent of today's exchanges. |
