Opening Batsman - won the Racing Plus Chase at Kempton last Saturday.

Has 5 wins from 11 starts over the past 15 months. Doesn't win by far and pretty much driven out for all those victories.

Quote:
“Ice - the winter of 1739/1740 was so cold that race meetings were held on the frozen River Tees near Barnard Castle in County Durham.”

York - 1607 must have been equally chilly as horse racing is known to have taken place on the frozen River Ouse between Micklegate Tower and Skeldergate Postern.

Aged - prior to 1934 (I think) the age of a 7-y-o (or older) wasn't shown on the racecard for Flat meetings and didn't appear in the racing results.

Such a horse would instead be described as 'aged' as in:

2:30: 1 Broken Ice (6-8-5) 5/1; 2 Gay Ensign (4-9-10) 15/8 fav; 3 Sunnyborough (aged-8-2) 11/4.

Quote:
“Lord Loris - winner of the 1914 Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris.

The horse was subsequently requisitioned for service in the French Army and died of shrapnel wounds shortly after the outbreak of war.”

Carter, Alec - jockey on Lord Loris for his Grand-Steeplechase win.

Joined the army at the same time as the horse & died of shrapnel wounds a few days after the animal was killed.

Iron Liege - 1957 Kentucky Derby winner and a very lucky one at that.

Gallant Man would surely have won the race but for jockey Willie Shoemaker misjudging the finish line and standing up in his stirrups too early thus allowing Iron Liege to get up and win by a nose.
