Huntsman, The - 1862 Grand National winner.
He was the first of two to be trained in France, the other being Cortolvin in 1867. Both were trained by Englishman Harry Lamplugh who also rode The Huntsman to his victory. |

Milkshaking - doping technique that involves passing an alkalising agent (often sodium bicarbonate) into a horse's stomach.
The object of this practice is to neutralise the naturally occurring lactic acid in the stomach thus increasing the horse's endurance limits. |

^ OK but don't take Lasix along with the bicarbonate otherwise you can expect a severe bout of colic.
Orsippus - on his day a decent hurdler from 2m to 2m 5f. Won a Grade 1 at Liverpool a couple of years back and seems to run well at Cheltenham. Named for a Greek runner who in the 8th century BC was allegedly the first athlete to run in a foot race naked at the Olympic Games. |

Tudor Minstrel often ignored probably because he raced so long ago and didn't stay beyond a mile but he is the joint second highest Timeform rated horse alongside Brigadier Gerard.
Beautifully named being by Owen Tudor out of Sansonnet he was trained and ridden by the legends Fred Darling and Gordon Richards who both called him the greatest horse they had ever been associated with. He won the 1947 2,000 guineas by an official 8 lengths though many described it as nearer 12. He subsequently became a successful sire here and in the US where he sired a Kentucky Derby winner. |

IXion - 1998 German colt by Winged Love.
His namesake in Greek Mythology was king of the Lapiths who ended up tied to a fiery spinning wheel for casting covetous glances in the direction of Hera, squeeze of Zeus. |

David Junior - 2005 Champion Stakes winner, followed up by taking the $5m Dubai Duty Free Stakes & the Eclipse the following year.
Owned by porn baron David Sullivan, who races under the name Roldvale Ltd, and named after one of his sons. Sullivan reportedly owns the largest collection of Victorian era racing trophies in the country, which includes the original Grand National Cup. |
