Count Guido Deiro - 6-y-o gelding trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies. Got off the mark when winning a maiden hurdle at Towcester on March 31.

Named after a famous vaudeville star who was once married to Mae West.

Eight - number of grounds occupied by Fulham Football Club before moving to Craven Cottage in 1896.

A cottage was built in on the site in 1780 but was destroyed by fire in 1888. The original owner was William Craven, 6th Baron Craven (1738-1791), a member of the Jockey Club and a major supporter of racing at Newmarket. The Craven meeting at the course is named in his honour.

Inaugurated in 1961 The Nell Gwyn Stakes is named after the most famous of Charles II's many and varied mistresses.

The race has sometimes been a guide to the first fillies Classic. Winners of the Nell Gwyn have gone on to take the 1,000 Guineas 6 times since 1976, Speciosa being the most recent in 2006.

Mac Vidi - at 15 the oldest horse to complete the course in the Gold Cup. He finished 3rd in 1980 (promoted to 2nd on the disqualification of Tied Cottage).

(Mac Vidi improved out of all recognition at 14 & 15 winning 7 races in 1979/1980 including several hotly contested chases.)

Qatar - the capital city Doha was the scene of a race between Oscar Pistorius and an Arab racehorse named Maserati in December last year.

Pistorius received a 15 metre start over a distance of 115 metres and won rather cosily by just over 1 second.

Unlicensed betting shops (known as List Houses) flourished from the late 18th century until 1853.

In that year the Betting Houses Act was passed. This closed down the List Houses and drove betting into pubs until they too came under the same Act. From that time on bookmakers largely took to the streets and it became far more difficult for the working man to place a bet*. Ultimately in 1907 street betting was banned as well which resulted in the business going underground until 1961 when betting shops became legal once more.

The 1853 Act was inspired by the anti-gambling lobby. The lobby proposed that for those at the bottom of life's pile, gambling led to debt, crime, prison and the breakdown of family life.

*Private clubs such as Tattersalls remained unaffected on the basis that the rich and titled were capable of looking after themselves (a lot of them weren't).

Water Jump - in 1999 29 NH courses out of 42 had a water jump. In 2012 this number had fallen to 14 out of 43.

Leopardstown was the last Irish racecourse to feature a water jump. It was removed in 1966.
