Abernant Stakes - Group 3 sprint named after Timeform 142 rated Abernant who raced in the late 1940s.
Won last week by Henry Cecil's 4-y-o Tickled Pink. It's difficult to recall when Sir Henry last had a good sprinter (or any sprinter at all for that matter). Possibly Gayane who finished 2nd to Ajdal in the 1986 July Cup answers the question but perhaps my memory isn't what it was. |

Cwrw. The winner of the 1812 2,000 guineas, I think in Welsh it refers to beer.

Fastest recorded time for the 2,000 guineas was clocked by Tudor Minstrel when winning by 8 lengths and stood for 47 years until Mr Baileys bettered it in 1994.

Geldings were allowed to run in the colts' Classics until 1904.
Curzon was the last such horse to be placed in the Derby finishing a close 2nd to Sir Visto in 1895. This near miss convinced many that a horse winning the premier classic without the ability to pass on his or her genes wasn't a good idea. Hence from 1905 onwards the colts' classics were restricted to entires and fillies. |

Inbred, the mating of closely related horses. A horse described as inbred 2x3 to say Sadlers Wells means he appears in their sire's line 2 generations back and in their dam's line 3 generations back. Sadlers Wells however would not be described as inbred.

Newton Abbot - when the last hurdle at Newton Abbot is positioned at its closest to the winning post the run-in is about 70 yards making it probably the shortest in the country.

Rous, Henry John (1795-1877) - one time Admiral in the Royal Navy who became a member of the Jockey Club in 1838.
Appointed public handicapper in 1855 & subsequently introduced the weight-for-age scale still in use today (with a few tweaks). |
