Bash Street Kids - there is a startling omission in the complement of racehorses named after the characters in the famous comic strip.

We've had Danny, Erbert, Fatty, Plug, Sidney, Spotty, Toots, Wilfrid, Cuthbert, Headmaster, Janitor, Olive, Teacher and Winston.

But no Smiffy.

Isonomy. The first horse to win the Stayers Triple Crown (Ascot Gold Cup/Goodwood Cup/Doncaster Cup) in 1875, a feat which was not repeated until 1949. His owner kept him under wraps as a 3yo for a massive gamble in the Cambridgeshire at the end of the season which earned him £40,000. Such was his fame he is mentioned in a Sherlock Holmes novel Silver Blaze as an ancestor of the fictional horse.

Japan - despite an occasional tendency to find nothing off the bridle Blackstairmountain emerged victorious in the Grade 1 Nakayama Grand Jump a couple of weeks ago.

The horse got home by a ½ length and won £465,000 for connections in the process.

Mad Moose - gelding trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies. Winner of 6 races from 35 starts over jumps.

Refused to race at both Cheltenham & Aintree this spring but went into the stalls like a lamb at Doncaster last Friday and proceeded to break his maiden on the flat at the ripe old age of 9.

Palace House Stakes - Group 3 5f sprint run on the first day of Newmarket's Guineas meeting. Named after a building in the town with connections to Charles II.

Following discoveries by C4's Time Team in 2011 the site is to be redeveloped as the Home of Horseracing National Heritage Centre.

Until Frankel won the Greenham Stakes & the 2,000 Guineas in 2011 only one horse (Wollow in 1976) had completed that double since 1932.
