Crucifix. The first filly to win the 2,000 and the 1,000 guineas in 1840, she also won the Oaks and was unbeaten in 12 starts.

Z - no winner of the Chester Cup has a name beginning with 'Z'. Not only that, no winning horse has a 'Z' anywhere in its name.
None of tomorrow's runners feature a 'Z' in their names either so this peculiar record, going back all the way to 1824, will hold for at least one more year. |

Chester Vase - 5 horses have won this race since its inception in 1907 and then gone on to take the Derby.
The relevant years were 1923, 1933, 1934, 1980 & 1981. The last horse to run in the Vase and win the Derby was Quest For Fame in 1990. |

Dee Stakes - about as good a Derby Trial as the Chester Vase.
4 horses in 200 years have won this race and then taken the Derby (1890, 1959, 1999 & 2003) the most recent being Kris Kin. |

Forty Three - during the past 15 years 43 races over 5f at Chester (out of a total of 205) have been won by the horse coming out of stall 1.

Hold up, a tactic generally not suited to Chester.

James, Frank - brother of the more famous Jesse.
In his post-outlaw days he worked for some time as a betting commissioner at the Fair Grounds race track in New Orleans. Also, the Kentucky Derby website has him visiting Churchill Downs for the 1889 renewal. |

Newspaper Tipsters - Cayton, once a tipster for the Morning Star, holds the unenviable record of selecting 54 losing naps in a row.

Odds-on 1/4 favourite should have been his selection one day just to break the sequence!

Cayton also topped the naps table 4 times, an achievement that must be considered a triumph for Marxist-Leninist tipping philosophy over that of the more bourgeois and reactionary newspapers of that time. |

Thousand Stars - ran second to Hurricane Fly in the Rabobank Champion Hurdle at Punchestown 2 weeks ago.
This was the 10th race in which the horse has finished behind his illustrious stablemate, all of them at Grade 1 level. |
