Watson, Dr - in The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place (the 56th and last of Conan Doyle's short stories featuring Sherlock Holmes) it is revealed that Watson is something of a punter.

Quote:
“Holmes: By the way, Watson, you know something of racing?

Watson: I ought to. I pay for it with about half my wound pension.

Holmes: Then I'll make you my Handy Guide to the Turf.”

Following the Silver Blaze debacle earlier in the canon, Holmes has clearly accepted that he knows nothing about horse racing and has wisely decided to defer to Watson in such matters.

Chopin - 8 length winner of a German Group 3 over 1m last month.

Expected to be supplemented for The Derby next Monday at a cost of £75,000. Generally available at 10/1 for the Classic.

If the colt starts he'll be the first ever German trained runner in the history of the race.

Ginevra - 1969 filly owned by Charles St George, a good friend of Lester Piggott. Lester rode her a few times but couldn't get on with her.

On the last of these occasions Piggott, never noticeably sentimental, got off the horse and told St George he might as well have her shot.

Ginevra went on to win the 1972 Oaks under Tony Murray.

International Stakes - York showpiece race first run 1972.

The inaugural running saw Panamanian jockey Braulio Baeza ride Roberto to beat Brigadier Gerard 3l in a course record time.

It was his first ever ride in this country and his only ride at the meeting. He flew back to Saratoga straight after the race and I don't think he ever returned.

Mad is certainly the right term, as the Gelding returned to his old tricks by refusing to race at York yesterday (quite amusing as long as you didn't back him)

^ That performance by MM stopped me from offering this somewhat optimistic view:

Nigel Twiston-Davies - following Mad Moose's 2nd place in the Ormonde Stakes a couple of weeks ago (albeit at a respectful distance behind Mount Athos) the trainer must be wishing he'd entered this horse in the 2007 Classics.

Pau - Cheltenham might have the Cotswolds as a backdrop but the racecourse at Pau has the Pyrenees.
