Can't believe he has picked Burgess at centre, a position he does not even play at for his club. A big risk.
I should think anyone with any sense is staying clear of Burrell.

I still think he's a better option than burrell who's a liability at international level of recent. It'll probably be barritt and JJ starting anyhow and even Faz can deputise at 12

By all accounts farrell and Catt campaigned hard for SB's inclusion so maybe he's showing very well in back sessions and training matches. He had a very good cameo v France to be fair

I do see where people are coming from with their doubts tho

You are entitled to your opinion, of course but as someone who has watched club rugby and been a Gloucester season ticket holder for more years than I care to remember I disagree entirely.

The problem with watching rugby, or any sport, on TV is the camera follows the ball, what it doesn't show is the bigger picture you see when you watch the game live.

Billy is far more creative that most of the players Lancaster has picked, I mean Barritt, really?? Burgess?? Manu-overboard Tuilagi, (although fortunately he has "unselected" himself)??

The difference is, though, Billy has a good rugby brain and doesn't mind going in where it will hurt. When he came on against France last Saturday he was, more often than not, playing as a openside and securing the ball because England's back row are so slow pedestrian would be exaggerating their speed and Lancaster seems to think retaining possession or trying to get a turnover are entirely optional.

Personally I think Billy is better off out of it as he won't be tainted by the mess it is very likely to become.

I think Barritt is one of the most underrated players in the world

he was a colossus in the Autumn internationals, and was abig loss during the 6n

he's not creative but he does a job superbly well. Great warrior. Leave the creativity to JJ

England play a very similar way to Saracens, so in that respect both Barritt and Farrell fit in perfectly. A very narrow, one-dimensional game based around defence. So six points up with 10 minutes to go and no problem, you would expect either of them to win the game. The problem is, with both England and Saracens, is that turn that around and make it six points down and 10 minutes to go you wouldn't look to someone like Barritt to turn the game on its head like a Greenwood, Guscott, or indeed, a BOD.

Because England do play that way the ball coming back is often very slow, Space at international level is at a premium anyway, the way England play makes that even more of a problem for someone like JJ, that is if he gets the ball in the first place, of course.

Sarries try to sign Tuilagi for £400k

Salary cap? What salary cap?

They've freed up a fair bit of money this season with Johnston and Strettle out.

Not that I'd sign him, as a Sarries fan, as long as we could keep hold of Barritt, Bosch and Wyles. Too injury-prone and a discipline worry.

I assume Wyles will be mostly starting on the wing though with Strettle gone?

Probably, unless they bring through someone like Mike Ellery or one of the U20 guys. Hopefully not Fercu though, if he's still there, I don't really rate him.

If we want a marquee player we could do with a 10 for when Hodgson retires. Problem there being that we need someone who's willing to be benched for Farrell in a good few games.

Who's leaving/has left Sarries this season?

Are the likes of the foreign players Burger, petrus DuP, Hargreaves still around? it's some squad really!

Could be a massive season by Itoje in store

Strettle and James Johnston have gone. I think they're the only ones though. We've signed Michael Rhodes and Samuela Vunisa for the second/back row (not that we really needed to given the decent youth prospects we have there) but it's 9 and 10 I think we're lacking at. There's nobody behind Hodgson if Farrell and Goode are away with England, and De Kock and Wigglesworth are both over 30. With McCall seemingly being reluctant to give Ben Spencer game time we could be really stuffed at 9 and 10 if De Kock, Wigglesworth and Hodgson all retired in the space of a season or so.

The domestic season started with Worcester getting a late win against Northampton.

Even at this stage that could be a vital win given Newcastle were well beaten at home.

At least it looks like we'll have 12 competitive teams in the Aviva this season.

Premiership returned last weekend.

Wasps were awful and yet still could have snatched a draw, if we'd nailed two of our kicks. Very weird being at the Stoop and hearing their crowd spontaneously applaud the returning England players.

I get that you want to stick up for your players, but clapping felt very out of place. Maybe only Easter was worthy of it and he only played one game.

London Irish to play 'home game' in New York

Quote:
“Premiership Rugby said the announcement was "a significant day" in its history.

"It has taken a number of years and a lot of hard work to bring to fruition," chief executive Mark McCafferty said.

"There are ambitious plans to grow the game in the States and this is the latest stage in that strategy."

The game will take place in the build-up to St Patrick's Day and London Irish hope to attract New York region's significant Irish community. ”

Whilst there might be "ambitious plans to grow the game in the States" if I were a LI season ticket holder I'd be livid, but sadly the fans come a long way last in such situations.

As a Wasps fan, I can sympathise with the annoyance of home matches suddenly moving.

Having said that it could be an interesting way to grow the game in US.

There is a rumour going around at the moment that Bath could walk away from the Aviva Premiership and join the Rabo as Bruce Craig throws his toys out of the pram over the discontent over the salary cap whitewash and clubs using Twitter to give their opinion. I know Gloucester are going to make a statement about it in the next week or so..

Time to move back to this thread altogether?

Anyhow, Northampton today announced the signing of Louis Picamoles. That is one hell of a signing and a statement by the Saints

Definitely the highest profile transfer from France to England- still in the prime of his career

Can only benefit the premiership

He's not coming until the end of the season though is he? Still, huge signing, a good replacement in terms of bulk for when Matfield goes and a sign about French players and the French league... I think Toulon for all their excitement for us have torn the heart from that league.

Yeah not till the Summer.

They do need a replacement for Manoa alright, the back row is a little light now.

I assume Victor will play another season next year

Wouldn't that make him about 50 lol... I swear I thought he was retiring last year.
