Is it just me or is this the most low key build up ever for a six nations? I do think the failure of the NH teams at the RWC really puts a question mark on the prestige of the event in its current state. That said I'll be glued to it as ever
It's a Wales or England title for me and given the uncertainty over England with a new mgmt team I think Wales are the safer call at the minute.
Wales who were probably the one NH team (along with Scotland I guess) who can leave with their heads held high from the RWC are slowly getting players back after their injury crisis and have a stable and steady team for a while now. they're the least unknown quantity in the event, and I do think they have a squad tailor made to beat their NH rivals. They really need to avoid a slow start like with recent years though. Traditionally perform well after a RWC year (won slam both times under gatty thus far)
England's whole campaign could hinge on a real banana skin at Murrayfield on Saturday. If they navigate that one they have both Ireland and Wales to come at home, they'll be super confident. I do expect one mess up somewhere along the way though, so I'd predict 4 wins again, for the 5th or 6th season running.
I think we'll see France improvement under a new coach and I have a feeling they'll beat either England or Ireland in Paris and finally claim a big win again. I think a title is a bridge too far though
Scotland's hopes also hinge on Saturday, a win and they could become a real dark horse for a title shot, a loss and they're already in a wooden spoon battle perhaps.
Ireland are already a write off for me, too many injuries, confidence dented in the RWC and too many players playing sub-par for their clubs, who have all done terribly in Europe. There remains a real unnerving possibility Ireland could lose all their first 3 matches. I expect a similar injury-riddled campaign to 2013 if I'm honest
Italy with all due respect are only making up the numbers and will be targeting their annual "six-pointer" vs Scotland already. They'll no doubt give a good account of themselves in a game or two but there are too many matches in this competition for a thread-bare squad
If I had to predict I'd go
Wales (PD)
England
France
Ireland
Scotland
Italy
It's the most intriguing campaign for a while though, imo
