Back in 2012 when Gatland had his previous time off from Wales to prepare as coach for a Lions tour,Wales lost all four Autumn series games. This led to us being in the same World Cup group as Australia and England as the draw was based on the world rankings at that time.
In the 6nations that followed, we lost the first game at home to Ireland then won the next four.Including the record win over England to take the title on points difference. On current form, the Lions party will have a majority English and Irish. The media will also be telling us that so it's bound to fire up Welsh and Scottish players in the 2017 six nations.”

In all fairness that was probably the weakest Six Nations in years. Wales played admittedly very well in the England match, but in terms of the other games they were the best of a pretty bad lot.
I'm still not convinced on Rob Howley, though I don't know where Wales can really go. They don't have huge numbers of alternative players that could be picked like England had at times recently that they have been struggling. In my opinion the WRU should be looking at getting Dai Young in when Gatland goes but until then they are not good enough to consistently compete with England and Ireland when those sides are playing to their full potential.
