Yes, if you lose by 7 or fewer points and score 4 or more tries in a match, then you do indeed get 2 bonus points.
Which is exactly how Japan got knocked out of the World Cup. They beat SA but only scored 3 tries. So for a stupendous win, they got 4 points. SA got 4 tries and lost by less than 7 so got 2 points, effectively making Japan's win worth half of what it was.

Personally I just like the win-loss system, followed by points difference. Winning a rugby match isn't solely based on tries, or at least it shouldn't be. There are three ways of scoring points, and prioritising one over the other will only result in rugby teams becoming more one-sided, unsubtle and tactics will go out of the window in favour of more of the same overly-physical dull arm wrestles we've become grudgingly accustomed to. The bonus point system has been introduced purely for the benefit of the bored viewing public but it will actually do nothing to expand the game.

If you want to reward high scores rather than just the win, then introduce a system where you get a point for winning margin - say 1 point for every 15 points more you score than the oppo....

Hartley sent off - might get a few negative headlines?
Whether he was trying to dislodge the ball or not, he knows enough not to be swinging his arm into contact when he didn't need to. Seems to have improved his discipline since being England Captain but could be a liability in a Lions series. Which is likely to be far tighter in scoreline than any of the wins England have had in the last year.

And I understand he is under pressure for his place as such but being the captain of a successful side helps him keep control no doubt.

As you say the Lions is different - we can hardly afford to have 14 men against New Zealand.

Good weekend for the Irish teams in the European Cup - Ulster picking up an impressive win and Munster hammering Leicester.

There has been some shocking scheduling of the Christmas matches in the Premiership. Pretty much all six fixtures, Bath fans having to traipse back from Coventry on Christmas Eve at 4pm.

Its pretty easy with two Northern sides, two London, four South West and four Midland-ish sides to make up six matches for Christmas weekend and New Year isn't too difficult.

The Celtic League had the sense to have the local games.

Mind you still close to the top 4 despite a poor European season.

Although both Scottish teams went to Italy on New Year's weekend.... crazy.

The Welsh local derby thing is a (very welcome) hangover from the Premiership days - Newport v Cardiff in particular was almost always on on Boxing Day.

Manu Tuilagi's season over. Bloke has had a bad time with injuries in his career.
