My ex fiance did this job for the council, not a private cowboy company, and he was known as a bailiff, which is what I always thought someone who worked in this field was known as. So are these people called 'sheriffs' just by the programme makers? I know they have sheriffs in scotland, but england?

On shows like Cowboy Builders the poor customers rarely get any financial comeback from scummy builders, they pay out 1000s of pounds for a half-built extension yet are resigned to writing off the experience and never seeing their money again.
Why can't bailiffs recover their money via goods to the value of from the builder's assets ? |

This has genuinely been one of my facourite programs....... a real insight in to how people who owe money try to get out of paying.
The people owing money try their best to come up with excuses, but gladly the sheriffs seem to get the money most of the time |

I love this programme too. It's brilliant. But I get really angry when people don't cough up what they rightly owe.

I saw that episode where a law firm had over £50,000 in debt. HOLY CRAP!
![]() The excuses the guy kept coming up with were utter nonsense. He may have paid £7k but he still has another £43k to pay off! |

The way of not paying I really hate, is when a company or owner try to transfer their assets to another company, that they just so happen to own as well, or to a relative.

"Mr Raj? Of R.J Motors? We've come to collect the money you owe"
"I'am Mr Raj but R.J Motors doesn't exist anymore. This is J.R. Motors............." Every bloody time! I love the fact that the Sheriffs are also charging for their time so the longer they stall the more they have to end up paying anyway.

No such thing as a Sheriff in England and Wales. The blokes in the show are Bailiffs. The show producers chose the term Sheriff partially because it sounds more dramatic, and partially because the term bailiff has been misappropriated by the scumbag oppitunist debt collection industry, so as a result people think a Bailiff which is a court appointed official, and a debt collector are the same thing.
For instance they have the right to enter a residential premiss if there is an open door or window, but do not have the right to force their way in. |

The new rules not for Bailiffs at all they are for debt collection agents. Bailiffs are court appointed officials responsible for the collection of fines and court judgements. I wish the media would stop with the misuse of the term bailiff when they mean debt collector they are not the same thing.

The Sheriffs Are Coming is a real guilty pleasure for me. On the one hand it's nice to see con-artists being stressed out like their victims but on the other hand I suspect these same people (the sheriffs) are just as happy to harass poor people who have genuinely fallen on hard times through no fault of their own.

I have read the story and Sky have incorrectly used the term Bailiff instead of private debt recovery agent. Bailiffs are court appointed enforcement agents responsible for the recovery of fines and court judgements. The rules are for the debt recovery industry.

It does not matter how many stories you link the media as a whole incorrectly use the term Bailiff as a synonym for debt collector they are not the same thing. The new rules are for private debt recovery companies.

Watched around 6 episodes of this, initially it was interesting, but the formula soon wore thin with me because there were too many incidents of two men knocking on a door, cameraman asked to leave and the payment made with a chip & pin machine without too much hassle.
It needs spicing up to make good television, I'm not talking about shooting people on the doorstep but a few more actual seizures (instead of the paper exercise) would make better telly! |

I record this programme everyday, it's very entertaining. The used car place where the owner kept bringing out a sign to prove it was a different company and quickly changed the name on the website was one of my favourites! And I love it when the debtor calls the police to try and make them move the bailiffs, who have a High Court writ. Quote:
Well they are know as High Court Enforcement Officials and are still different to bailiffs.
For instance they have the right to enter a residential premiss if there is an open door or window, but do not have the right to force their way in. |
