This is a little something I've discovered from reading the forums on 'Survivor', it's something called Edgic and it is basically analysing the edit of each episode and using that as a way of determining who wins and who is being eliminated next.

We devote this thread to try and pick the winner by looking at the editing, player by player, and applying logic from past editing patterns or observations about what we have been shown.

How Edgic Works
Everyone is welcome to participate.
For anyone new who wants to jump on board here is generally how it goes:

After watching each episode posters rate the players:

Step 1:
Ratings: OTT, CP, MOR, UTR and INV

OTT (over the top)
CP (complex personality)
MOR (middle of the road)
UTR (under the radar)
INV (Invisible)

Step 2:
Tone: NN, N, neutral (no tone), P, PP (Rate players from Really Negative to Really Positive)

* M (Mixed) This is a special Tone designation. It is used when a player has both significant negative and significant positive scenes in one episode. It helps differentiate from the "nothing" (neutral) tone of a neglected character or the static neutral of a middle of the road or complex character. It shows active manipulation of a character, rather than a passive or neglected edit.

Note: If an edit contains minor P manipulation but a lot of N manipulation, then the rating is not Mixed, but Negative, as the N manipulation overwhelms the P (and vice versa). Very minor P & N manipulation is better recorded as a Neutral.

Visibility: 1 to 5

I've attempted it before on the Apprentice and could never stop changing it before I was done.

So the first episode has aired, what are people's first assessments?

Concentrating on Katie, I really didn't like her, especially based on first impressions vids on the official site. But during the last couple of minutes I actually quite liked her ( don't know where that came from). I think because she seemed the most down-to-earth in comparison to Bilyana and Gabrielle.

I'm shocked there seems to be alot of Jane-dislike. I don't think she did much wrong.

The only people who I thought got negative edits were Katie (shown as useless the whole time), and Gabrielle (her whole team constantly pinpointing her flaws).
Bilyana's was kind of mixed. She made mistakes and wasn't likeable to her team, but she was also shown to be very capable at selling and that her team were unfairly ganging up on her.
Jane's edit was someone who was just very strong-willed and gobby, but not awful or uncooperative. Same goes for Maria.

Out of the guys, the only one I got a hint of negativity from was Stephen when he was trying to take over (Duane even saying in a confessional that he didn't like it), but his idea of cutting prices was shown to be smart. So I guess it balanced out a bit.

Bear with me on the actual scores as it usually takes me a bit of time to absorb it all, and maybe a repeat viewing of the episode.

Phoenix

Duane - Quite a positive edit I thought, could sell
Nick - The best edit, imo. He led well, made good decisions, was part of the team that sold out, I was impressed.
Stephen - bit negative, tried to take over with the pricing issue, but he turned out to be right. Not overly negative.
Adam - Wasn't shown enough to really rate him
Tom - Wasn't shown enough again
Azhar - Got the worst edit from the boys, imo. He was part of the team that had to refund the bags and got most of the flak for it.
Michael - Not shown enough to generate an opinion, really.
Ricky - Not shown enough, though I knew his "reflection of perfection" line would be shown. His audition suggested he'd be a character, but he didn't really come across that way tonight.

Sterling

Gabrielle - I thought she did OK, but the edit wasn't great. She was indecisive. Whilst Nick was immediately on the numbers, she barely thought about them and the team started to rally against her. Don't think she'll win.
Katie - Probably got the worst edit. She was seen slagging off Bilyana, but did little else and was part of the group that bullied that poor shop assistant.
Jane - Sorry meglos, I disliked her. She came across really aggressive and was part of the group that bullied the shop assistant. She needs to tone it down. I thought Bilyana would be the Jadine/Joanna/Melody/Debra typical aggressive woman that just falls short, but now I think that'll be Jane and therefore I think she'll go far.
Maria - Not shown enough, but was part of the team that sold out (I think?), so slightly positive.
Laura - Same as Maria. Barely shown, but she was part of the team that sold out, so she must have done something right.
Jade - Possibly the most positive of the girls. Came up with the design which was praised by Lord Sugar. I think she'll go far.
Jenna - Again barely shown, but she did help to bully the shop assistant, so I wasn't impressed.

Fired - Bilyana - I was shocked; I thought she'd be safe because she sold well, but she couldn't take Lord Sugar's hint. Got the typical aggressive woman edit, but, like Paloma in Series 6, got too gobby.

My prediction - Azhar is the Phoenix PM next week, so I'd guess that he will go next, especially judging on the preview, though Jane (Sterling's PM next week) seems to make a massive error on the pitching.

If I had to predict a Final Four now (I know its Week 1!!!) I'd say Nick, Duane, Jade and Jane.

EDIT: I won't do the ratings right now, but I will after a second viewing.

I wont be participating as editing shouldn't be done unless it is done seamlessly. The BBC needs to take a long hard look at their editing team so that its not obvious to the viewer. Bunch of amateurs. Astonishing lack of skillz

Talking about Jane again (yey ) funnily enough the worst part of her edit was Karren correcting her on the word 'strategy'. That was probably the only moment when she was actually questioned on what she was talking about, or at least made to look a bit foolish.
I thought for the most part her edit was saying 'Jane doesn't mess around and gets things done'.

When the girls all harrassed that shop assistant, it was done as a group and didn't really pinpoint anyone as being the one in the wrong (same with the boys and their rather crappy items they sold to that woman).
It just showed that the girls are all way too excitable/determined and need to cool it off a bit.

I've been reading several blogs and the forum comments, Jane is being perceived as an Irish snake (which is the general opinion).

The editing failed OR it succeeded (the latter would mean that you might be wrong).

Think I won't be joining this thread, as I am more of a spoiler kind of guy (the intro alone could have told you that some of the statements made in this thread are wrong).

My edgic powers are already failing.
Maybe my confusion is the difference between the edit of a candidate and the candidates own personality shining through (sometimes there can be a difference).

Oh well, I'm sure the 2nd episode will throw some further light on it. I mean my own opinions usually change a few times over the first few episodes of a series.

Yeah, just saw apparently is safe next week, so I got that wrong!

To be honest, I thought Gabriella's edit was better than she deserved. There was an effort to make her seem likeable and hard-working whereas in reality she was fairly useless in this task and could have had a worse edit.

Stephen got a bad edit I think. In fact, he got one of the worst because he was kind of turned into a joke figure? Although maybe he'll be a bit like James (series 5) but he reminded me of Mani (series 2). Katie's was bad but I sense she might have opportunity for growth.

Jane. I think her edit was sort of in the middle - it was her personality which people dislike although a lot of the things she said were right.

(Sorry I know this thread isn't really about that.)

Duane holds onto my top spot after today. He was seen to be assertive, seemed quite positive throughout with Adam as the antagonistic figure.

Great episode for Katie I felt, as it cemented the idea of her going far in the game, her negativity from episode 1 was downplayed and she was shown to be in the right in questioning the girls ignoring the market research. She is also being seen as an underdog by the way Jane seemed to blame her for the task loss when it wasn't the case I felt.

Nick's episode was quiet, but his strong episode 1 keeps him third.

Azhar is a tricky one in placing 4th, rather toneless for a project leader but what swayed me was Ricky's negative callout of him at the reward. Why mention this so early in the show? Maybe it is evidence of a Ricky vs Azhar fued somewhere down the line, possibly both as project leaders with Azhar as the victor?

Jane has a longterm edit, but not a winner one IMO. She could possibly be this year's Melody/ Debra/ Joanna.

I stand by what I said about Nick, Ricky, Jade and Katie being contenders, but Azhar has dropped for me. I'm not a fan of Duane, there's just something about him that I don't like, and it's the same with Stephen. Michael I have no idea, think he'll go whenever his team loses. Adam I think will get halfway before going, although he could be the Leon of this series. Tom I like the look of, but I fear he'll go the way of Gavin from last year. Jane I don't like whatsoever, she's the new Melody/Natasha. Laura I see as being another Ellie. Jenna I can see doing a Zoe. Gabrielle I like but think she'll go early on. Maria, I'm sorry she left, it's just another Alex situation. Either of the other 2 should have gone or there should have been a double firing.

So for me, still Jade/Nick/Katie/Ricky.

Everyone to their own but how can Maria possibly get an INV3 rating? surely being INV means little visibility, so it's almost impossible to get something other then an INV1. And personally I think Maria was as OTTN as they come, she was portrayed very negatively throughout with no complexity or understanding in her actions.

Azhar I agree is a tricky one to judge, but I felt that Ricky's comments are sort of signalling Ricky as an antagonist figure, and as a result I feel we are supposed to root for Azhar.

Interesting how the edits are balancing out, last week Gabrielle and Nick were important (as team leaders of course) this week they are practically invisible, and last week Laura was one of the most invisible candidates I've ever seen (or not seen) and yet this week she had a pivotal role.
Last week Katie's edit was blatently negative, but this week it was definitely positive (The other girls were just covering their own arses trying to blame her)
Keeps us on our toes.

I didn't really think Maria was negative. The only reason why I thought she would be fired is when she was shown falling asleep in the car, but I dismissed that as a humorous distraction to the episode.
Once again though my personal feelings sometimes makes it hard to look at the episode unbiased.

Like with Duane, I'm thinking do I like him because he's simply an easily likeable guy or is he shown to be likeable?
His edit has definitely been rather positive though, this week he came up with the product and was right to interrupt the pitch.
I forgot to do my scores last week, i'll do them before the 2nd episode clouds my judgement.

I'm sorry, but this is genuinely really funny. No, you're right, they should just air all nine hours of footage each week, just as it was filmed. Edit it properly or just play it all!

Edits are constructed to give you a bit of a narrative, which is necessary or it's just a cacophony of weird people in suits selling things. They draw attention to things that will be crucial later, 'cos otherwise you won't remember it by the time it's relevant - and so the more cynical of us (howdy!) can try and make guesses based on it. That's not symptomatic of a bad edit, that's symptomatic of a good edit. And they try to catch us off guard, anyway - Helen got about the same edit for the first five weeks last year as Sandeesh did, and yet they turned out to be stupendously different people.

It's not like it's disingenous, anyway. They'll have moments of re-ordering stuff, but they've got to make sure you see everything that gets mentioned in the boardroom (which they have to edit down to 20 minutes or so), see everything that goes into the finished project, see more or less how well each candidate performs on the task; if someone gets fired eight weeks later for being too bossy you've got to show that it's been a problem throughout so you'll favour the bossy bits... it's a very delicate art, highlighting only the important bits while keeping a rough narrative running throughout, but the fact that it's a little predictable is part of its strength, more than its weakness.

Not that it always works. They have done some slapdash editing - they were really pushing hard to make Jim look boorish last year, presumably because Lord Sugar took a dislike to him at a certain point (despite never seeing him on the tasks), but the man just came across as charming and capable throughout, as there weren't really many boorish moments to favour - but that just shows that you can only work with what's there. The events dictate the edit, rather than the edits dictating the events.



EDGIC!

Bad edits - Adam, Stephen, Ricky, Tom, and Azhar; all rubbish, and we've currently got a full half of the team (Azhar excepted) on Team Evil. Duane is increasingly looking like the one sane man, but that doesn't really prove much. "Nice, competent bloke gets to the final" is just as good a narrative as "Nice, competent bloke gets crushed by his team and fired week 3," but if I had to pick a finalist right now I'd give the edge to Duane. Which I'm glad of, 'cos I liked him before we started. In fact, I'd pick him as a winner.

Jane and Jenna are on Team Evil, too, although I get the impression Jane is basically the serpent king and all the other forces of evil are mere underlings. Jenna seems more incapable than hateful, but I'd happily have seen both of them fired. Bilyana and Maria weren't on Team Evil, and I definitely was not braced for a Maria firing (See, Marcello? Unpredictable! You can come back, they're doing a grand job) and while Katie was Team Rubbish last week, she was Team Pretty Good this week, so she's a bit of an unknown entity.

Laura seems competent - she can speak, she can think, she's a nice lady, throw her into Team Competent, along with Nick and Duane, and then that's almost a final-type thing.

Michael's the only one who's still invisible thanks to, yes, a very balanced edit, and Gabrielle seems lovely but ultimately a little average, so she'll probably be fired this side of the half way point. The longer she stays the happier I am, though, and not just 'cos I've got her in a sweepstake.

Jade, again, is a bit of an unknown quantity - seems basically upbeat, basically competent, basically not a force for evil, so we could throw her into the final possibly, but I don't really think we've seen enough of her; she feels like she's just taking a space. Nick, too, feels like more of a Leon than a Tom, he's not got enough fight to reach the final, got overridden by a (very overbearing, admittedly) Stephen as PM, and while that doesn't mean anything (hi, Tom!) I don't think the man's got enough strength of conviction to make it to the double figures. Good businessman and a nice bloke, though.

So!

To rank.

Duane & Laura seem like shoe-ins for the final, and therefore only one of them will likely reach it.

Jane seems brash and tenacious - which will often take you through to double figures or even the final if you moderate yourselves, Claire and Melody, but sometimes only as far as week 5 or so, Paloma and Jo. I think she's more of a Claire-and-Melody, though.

Jenna seems weaker, and probably will be fired week four or five.

The rest - anyone's guess! Michael, despite not saying anything, feels like a solid week eight boot. Basically competent, but basically not much to do - taking his place among the Leons and Chris Farrells of the Apprentice world. Ricky and Adam slightly earlier, Nick slightly later. Katie, I think, will surprise us all, Susie-style, and turn out to be one to watch, coasting to the final. Stephen will be fired week... ohhh, I don't know, five, based entirely on the fact that he reminds me of Mani Sandher.

Blah - who knows! Still not enough. We've got a couple of traits per candidate, these things won't solidify until week six or so, but that's half the fun of it.

Purely because I don't see her as an OTT (I think if she was then she would have been shown more throughout the two episodes) and she wasn't an UTR for me so I had to put her as INV as we didn't see much from her, but she was there if you know what I mean. I'm not too sure on the Azhar/Ricky situation, Ricky didn't say all that much in the episode - it was mainly Adam whilst they were a sub-team and then more of Tom in the boardroom so I don't know about that one just yet.

Remember that this time last year we hadn't seen much of Helen or Tom, but a lot of Jim and a fair amount of Susan, so maybe there's something to go on there. Tom didn't really show up until the beauty task (task 4 I think) and we didn't see much of Helen until the construction task (task 5) where she PMed.

Conclusions

Azhar will get fired soon, after he got a horribly negative edit for a PM win, that reminded me of Melissa and Noorul's PM wins than any other. Both were fired soon after. After two weeks, I genuinely can't think of anything Michael has said in either episode. He must get fired soon.

Duane will go far after two weeks of positive edits imo, whilst I think Jane is this series' Jim character after being heavily featured in both episodes. Katie, for me, got the first step of redemption arc last night - I think this means she'll go quite far as well.

Jade and Nick's edits yesterday were both quite confusing. After two hugely positive ones in Week 1, they were both barely visable yesterday. However, this doesn't necessarily rule them out of anything. My Final Five prediction remains at this stage:

In that order. Since two of them (Duane and Katie) are both PMing next week, I think that means that we still won't have a PM firee next week.

A fairly evened out edit for everyone. No-one was hidden, everyone was seen, and no-one hogged the spotlight.

Michael's character was addressed, but there just wasn't enough focus, or enough confessionals from him or about him, to warrant any kind of CP rating. I thought about the tone, as he came across as a likeable guy and the edit had a sympathetic edge to it, but it just wasn't enough to compensate for the number of shots of him appearing lost and clueless while his team were getting on with it.
Adam and Ricky were both overly cocky, and although Ricky has shown that quality before, this task was the first one to make his over-confidence look greatly misplaced.
Stephen always seems to make big blunders each task, and this week I felt his choice of the incorrectly misspelt name made him look foolish again.
Tom certainly has the most sour edit of the guys, he had more focus this time but he was still just shown just clumsily on the production line for a few seconds or commenting on other people's performances.
Katie got a solid edit as PM, but she wasn't coated in CPP like she was last week. It seemed pretty toneless to me. Nick was the same.

Jade, Jenna and Laura were all shown a couple of times helping the task along, but they were definitely the background characters of Sterling. Gabrielle was a key member of the pitching team, but her visibility was still rather poor, as Nick got the main focus.
Duane and Jane's clashing of personalities crossed them both over into CP territory, especially with the two confessionals during the reward. While Duane was again the rootable good guy, whereas Jane's rolling eyes, huffing and tutting led to a N tone from me.

Contenders:
Duane- A strong performance from Duane and a win as team leader keeps him in pole, but we now get his first doubts as a contender from the premisce of a potential fued with Jane. Pre-season I said that I was getting Lorraine vibes from Jane, maybe she'll prove to be the Lorraine figure in a different way; being the person who takes down the early favourite.

Nick- Being on the winning team helps Nick as well, he jumps back up into second place in my winner picks. No real negativity of any note and called out as the main pitcher in the task.

Katie- A drop for Katie, but her focus does keep her in my top 4, although I am beginning to potentially see her as a underdog fan favourite as apposed to a winner, but then again I thought the same thing about Tom, and look how that turned out.

Jade- Well I need a fourth, and it certainly isn't Azhar after a nothing week for him.

Week 3 Ratings:

Phoenix

Adam - UTR, N, 2 - Was going to give him a neutral until I saw You're Fired and his patronising comments towards Katie. I think he'll go soon, possibly next week as his edit really isn't good at the moment.
Azhar - INV, Neutral, 1 - Barely featured at all this week, which is an improvement on his negative edits the last few weeks. Was on the sub-team that didn't sell much, but he was seen closing a deal, so not that bad.
Katie - CP, P, 4 - A strong edit, especially for a losing PM. Most of her decisions were the right ones and the loss certainly wasn't down to her. I thought she was a better PM than Duane, imo.
Michael - UTR, N, 3 - I thought he would go the moment he was seen doing poorly with the sales. He barely featured in Weeks 1 and 2 and did badly this week. He was by far the weakest in the final three, so an obvious firing for me.
Ricky - MOR, M, 2 - Got a bad edit in terms of the fact that he led the unsucessful production team, but the blame lay more with Adam it seemed and he was great in the boardroom, I thought, so definitely a mixed edit for me.
Stephen - INV, Neutral, 2 - We barely saw him, but he did come up with the name of the bottle, which merits his 2 rating. He didn't feature enough to get a good or bad edit.
Tom - UTR, P, 2 - Didn't feature much and I may have totally misread it, but I really liked him this week and found myself wanting to do well. I hope he wins as PM next week.

Sterling

Duane - MOR, P, 4 - The other didn't do as good job as Katie for me, but did a sufficiently good job as PM. I thought his criticism of Jane on the winner's treat was uncalled for, but the edit made it seem more like Jane's fault. He is still a strong contender for me.
Gabrielle - INV, Neutral, 2 - Where has she gone since Week 1? She was in the big pitch (iirc) but did barely anything else. Her edit doesn't suggest that she'll make it that far.
Jade - UTR, P, 3 - Got a good strong edit as Nick's partner in crime! She did well on the task and reaffirmed her positive initial Week 1 edit. We'll see how she does on Phoenix next week, but I like her chances of getting far. A finalist for me atm.
Jane - MOR, N, 2 - Got the worst edit on Sterling, but I still reckon she's being set up as a love-to-hate figure. Particularly as on a week where she was largely invisible, they still squeezed in a minor spat with the PM and made a big deal of it.
Jenna - INV, Neutral, 1 - Was she on the task? I couldn't tell you what sub-team she was on or anything. Her edit is not promising at all. I can't see her lasting more than a few more weeks, especially with the really negative one from last week.
Laura - INV, Neutral, 1 - She was integral last week, but went missing again this week. Most of the girls on the production process barely featured this week... I'll reserve judgement on her long-term future until after her PM next week.
Nick - MOR, P, 3 - A strong contender for me. He came across as really well this week, did nothing wrong. Duane got some flak for the initial production process, but Nick did very well.

So, I saw nothing this week that changed my mind that the final five will be:

But the order is still confusing for me.

But plenty of time for that to change. I'm still unsure who will fall before the final (assuming the format is the same) but until further evidence, this is my Final Five. Jane is the dodgy one as I could conceivably see someone like Laura, Ricky or Tom taking her place, but we shall see. Next week's result could clear a few things up in terms of the long-term viability of a few of the candidates.

Nick-
Despite being on the losing side Nick seemed to be hidden from the negativity of the group, and was seen as one of the positives within the group.

Duane-
Duane got his first doubts for me, he came across as arrogant and cocky, which aren;t good traits for a winner. His earlier performances keep him in contention, like Nick he was hidden from the boardroom negativity.

Tom-
Tom jumps into my top 4 with a strong showing today, he was given the oppertunity to justify his actions, plus a win as PM and positive feedback from his peers bumps him to 4th.

Katie-
Katie got lost in the shuffle a bit this episode, and what I saw of her seemed quite negative at times, she along with Adam was vocal on his spending strategy (which proved to be right), but this was balanced by her correct call out of Duane's cockyness. Not good for her chances. (I was actually quite tempted to put Laura as my 4th pick)

Tom was a N rating until it was made to seem like his choice was a good idea, but his rather fumbling demeanour as PM and Katie's confessional still questioning his ability at the end, it balanced out to a M. But it also could have been a way to make Katie look a bit of a party-pooper, rather than it being an accurate observation. Adam was still his usual over-bearing self - 'it's either my way or the highway' attitude.
Jade's chances of winning took a severe drop, I mean surely the winner shoud have had a breakout episode by now? But then again *ahem* just look at last year.

Duane looked rather lost and out of place for the first time, but his reasons were unstandable.
I don't think Jane was really present on this task, she certainly lost all her fizz and was more out of place than Duane.
Gabrielle, Jenna and Laura were on either side of the reason the task was failed, but there was no good guy or bad guy. Although Laura was the one to get a real dressing-down after her slight over-confidence.
