Corner shops
Do you still use yours? I do. The first one we had here when we moved/married 31 yrs ago changed hands a few times in quick succession then however, we had another lovely family take over who employed my then children for paper rounds/ a few hours when it suited to fit in with school/college. They were lovely. Unfortunately, the owner developed dementia, his wife worked hard with her two sons- the one who helped most also had an autistic child - but they loved my three and all felt secure with each other. Sadly, they had to take retirement as the husband took to wandering at night and the main son had to go back to the Post Office. A few months later the father died, so sad. Then the shop closed.
![]() How it hit us & the community - 8 yrs later I still miss them. We do however have a new shop at the top of the street - it took many years to get this shop going well - but now we have 'Raj' and family. What another wonderful shop owner! He's wonderful & so are his family. They can't do enough for you. They've been there 3/4 yrs now and I love going there. I bought some 'strange' beans in my local Asian/Indian shop the weekend and as I went to the shop this morning I took a bean and asked Raj. Wow, he was more than delighted to help, he went upstairs & got some curry leaves from his wife and they told me how to cook my food. They were really happy and so was I - it just had me thinking how things have changed over the years but how lovely it is to integrate and exchange food knowledge. |

Sometimes do but I have to check the dates on everything before I buy it, plus the prices are horrendous compared to supermarkets.

See, the prices in my CS are fine - Andrex toilet roll £1.99 - Tesco £2.08 - Aeriel is 20p cheaper - the kitchen roll advertised is 10p cheaper ( the name fails me ATM but know the one) coconut milk is cheaper, most chocolates/ biscuits etc of a well known names are on offer. The dates are always checked by a lady by the name of 'S' and she's vigilant . It might be local/regional then?

Most are expensive, dirty, cramped, dark and have out of date products. I like Tesco Extra

We've not got one now, just a large costcutter.
The last place I lived in was a right shithole. There was a corner shop, the owner LIVED in it. You'd see him sat in there in the dark watching TV after it shut (the actual shop). The one before that was locally named as Grandad's - When I first moved there it was run by an older Asian man who didn't care for consistent pricing, or sell-by-dates. He also sold cheap baccy from abroad to you if you'd been going in there long enough. After his health started to fail him, he employed a younger man who spoke not a word of English. That was.. fun. |
