Any fans of Melanie Fiona?

She's been on my "Must check out" list for ages. I just checked out her debut and it's a very impressive album. She has a great voice and her sound is very "50/60's Northern Soul" with a slight modern twist.

Yep, I'm sort of a fan. Her new album The MF Life is moving away from the 50/60s era I think. Love 4am it's sucha great R&B hit. Also her song with B.o.B (Change The Record) is awesome. There's another song but I don't think she's included it on her album that sort of sounds like Man Down, It's called Like I Love You. She's done well, she's grabbed herself 2 grammys so far

Currently on album 2 and Album 2 is a million miles away from Album 1. It's more R&B.
Not that overly impressed. Prefer her sound she had with album 1

Her voice reminds me of Alexandra Burke.

The thing is, there are a few artists that release debut albums with that kind of feel to it, but when it comes to their second album they change direction. Melanie has done it, so has VV and I have a feeling Bruno Mars and Cee Lo may go for a more modern sound. Though I loved Melanies song "Do It To Me Right"

Listening to 'The MF Life' right now... first impressions are that its a good album... she can definitely write a good tune... but the direction is, as people have said, a long way from the debut, which i LOVE!!! i was more excited about her with that sound... The Bridge still sounds fresh now... will definitely give this album a chance tho

I thought I was the only Melanie fan here Thanks for making this thread, little monster

I love Melanie, her voice is amazing! '4 AM' is mediocre, but 'Gone And Never Coming Back', 'Wrong Side Of A Love Song' and 'Change The Record' are brilliant!! Can't wait for her album, hope she gets to release some more singles and videos.

My favorite Melanie tracks are 'Give It To Me Right' and 'It Kills Me' ( TIMELESS!!). The thing is that while the standout tracks of 'The Bridge' are superior to what I've heard from 'The MF Life' so far, her sophomore is shaping up to be more cohesive and great throughout Can't wait to buy!

As far as her direction and her sound goes, I think you should take into consideration that her label intervened A LOT during the recording sessions, so maybe she would go for a more soulful/ old school vibe if she had more creative control I think the album is great, though!

I am not suprised you have said that O Michel. Her debut wasn't a total flop but wasn't a huge seller. I reckon by making her more R&b and adding rappers onto her songs, they are trying to give her commericial success. After hearing her second album all afternoon, for me it screams TRYING TOO HARD and it may not even her fault. I feel like i am listening to a Brandy/Chrisette Michele type album.

I hope she returns to her debut album sound in the future. The bridge is an impressive debut.

I think it's a great album. Could have been better, but great nonetheless. I think she'll have more of a creative imput in the next album. She's a Grammy winner now anyway

But I don't think 'The MF Life' is that distant from her debut. It's less soulful, more contemporary, but it's pretty much the same genre of music. The only major difference is the production Her vocals are still top notch ( noticed the Brandy influence on some tracks too, though )

Such a shame labels get involved. Most music would sell really well if they didn't make it so commercial.

Excuse my typo, I meant *input

I think her label intervened because her 1st single ( 'Gone And Never Coming Back') which was more soulful didn't do very well. Besides, her debut sold moderately well ( I'm sure they're hoping for more this time around) relying on the urban smash that was 'It Kills Me' and that was one of the most r n'b songs off of that album, so maybe they tried to take that sound and capitalize on its success.

Anyway, she did a great job, especially considering all the pushbacks and label trouble. She just needs to re-introduce that old school vibe that made her debut so special

OK... so a few listens and she's winning me round with this album... cant say it'll ever top The Bridge for me, but it really is a good album... hope she does well with this loving 'Can't Say I Never Loved You' right now

I just listened to the album in its entirety ( I had already listened to 8 out of 13 tracks, but now I listened to the whole tracklist in the right order ) and it's a great album, but not as impressive as I would like it to be.

My top 5 tracks are 'Wrong Side Of A Love Song', 'This Time', 'Change The Record', 'Gone And Never Coming Back' and 'Bones', which is still growing on me.

'4 AM' and 'Watch Me Work' are good too. 'Break Down These Walls', 'I Been That Girl' and 'Running' are cool, but not strong enough.

'Can't Say I Never Loved You', 'L.O.V.E' and '6 AM' are not good imo. I think these are the 3 tracks that let the whole album down. 'Paper Rock Scissors' slays all these tracks.

There are still 2 tracks I haven't listened to yet ('Can't Do This No More' and 'What Am I To Do'), but so far I'd give the album 3 stars. As I said previously, it's more cohesive than 'The Bridge', but it just lacks the 2-3 amazing standout tracks that every album needs. 'The Bridge' had 'It Kills Me' (she hasn't topped it yet imo), 'Give It To Me Right' and 'Bang Bang', but 'The MF Life' just doesn't have any tracks that really blew me away. Still, a great r n'b album, though.
