Heavy Plasma / LCD T.V.'s
Andy Birkenhead

It's 2012 now. With the advancement in materials, construction methods etc, why do Plasmas etc weigh a ton ?
I thought they would be very light these days.
I've just bought a 50" LG plasma, and I nearly put my back out just putting it on the stand we have !

The weight of the glass alone in a plasma panel accounts for most of the weight.
LCD panels are much lighter plastic-type materials.

Although plasmas are much heavier than LCDs they are still much lighter than any comparable CRT - it's not even close.
A 50" plasma is twice the size (screen) of a 36" CRT but much lighter.

Oh yes!!!

The 36" Sony CRT sets weighed 120kg

Yea I've mounted 50" plasma's single handedly, its a heft, but its doable. Crt..even lifting a 27" was a chore. Its the weight distribution as well, panel is easy to hold and balance.

Absolutely. My 50inch Plasma is damn heavy and needs two people to do it safely that's true, you can "just" lift it single handledly onto and off of a table though. But I collected a 36" Panasonic CRT for a friend recently and boy, was that a bloody struggle. It took three of us to lift it in and out of the car and even then, we still struggled.

depends on the walls too. Our friends were told they couldnt have their 60in LCD on the wall as the wall would not take the weight (screen would simply fall of the wall).

Picture is most important and Plasma wins.

There's something SERIOUSLY wrong with the wall if that's a supposed reason for not fitting it higher - there should be no difference at all depending on height, and it won't fall off if it's fitted properly.

As long as it's fitted on a flat bracket there shouldn't be any problems with almost all wall types.

would a "prefab" type inside wall be a reason.....i am no expert, i am just saying what the installers told them.

Yeah that might be why. Ideally you fix into a solid brick/concrete block wall. With stud walls you have to find the wood studs and some brackets can do this due to spacing etc.

Impossible. If your wall is that weak you better move out before your house falls down or someone leans and falls through a wall, a tv is no weight at all, especially one that is not on a long arm. The only change you have to make is using the right anchors for the job. If the installers were hacks and trying to install into plaster or wallboard instead of studs then yea, they would not be able to support a tv safely.

What has that got to do with how heavy it is though?

Precisely nothing The ultimate off topic posting

If you want to mount a plasma in a precise location on an internal stud wall and the the timber battens are in the wrong place then you need to provide some extra battens (not a simple job). However a LCD will need the same so it's basically irrelevant .

You can't mount either on a plaster board partition wall without solid timber behind it, given a solid wall Brick or Breeze behind the plaster with suitable fixings you could mount either.

The whole thread sounds bizarre to me
