Why do artists keep releasing the wrong singles
So frustrating, i'm very good IMO at choosing singles and i seriously think alot of got it very wrong.
Will Young A truly stellar album Echoes. But Losing Myself is good i admit, but for me the obvious choice is Happy Now or Hearts on Fire or even Silent Valentine. Rebecca ferguson Crazy choices in Glitter and gold and Too good to lose. Surely Shoulder to Shoulder is the obvious stand out, alongside Mr Bright Eyes and Teach Me How To Be Loved Girls Aloud I know dated but stellar albums but they where stupid not to release songs like Girl Overboard instead of Cant Speak French, Graffiti My soul instead of Wake Me Up and Wild Horses/Watch me Go/Waiting instead of Whole Lotta History. JLS Teach me How to dance instead You Make Me Feel (their flop) and Thats My Girl from previous album. Cher Lloyd Crazy choice in WANT U BACK.good for astro not good for you. It's just generic, not stand out at all - done nothing for her album sales as i predicted. 'Beautiful People' with Carolina Liar would have got her so noticed and people would have realized how special she is. The other 2 choices of singles where good. Grow Up would do too. One Direction I'm not saying they deserve anything more success but surely Up All Night and Tell Me A Lie should have been the 2nd and 3rd single instead.. Marcus Collins Mark my words he'll flop with Mercy. Either Innocence, Dont Surrender or Thats Just Life Matt Cardle Slowly and Reflections instead of Run for your life (which was ok) and Starlight. Amazing's a good song. Nadine Coyle Great album, but surely Runnin' was the obvious debut either that or Put Your Hands Up nothing else. Nicola Roberts Great album again. First 2 singles perfect. If she wanted attention Sticks and Stones was the way to go,Yo-yo was just a waste of money pointless. The video would have been cheaper too and made more impact. The Saturdays White Lies and Get Ready Get Set would be huge for them... |

A better question given that list is why do record companies keep choosing the wrong artists?

I think Lady Gaga should have released Scheisse and Bloody Mary from Born This Way instead of Judas or You and I.
Beyoncé should've released End Of Time instead of Run The World, it shouldn't of been released and shouldn't of been included as an album track, I like it but it's not a album track kind of track. |

His last album is a real disappointment bar In Case You Didn't Know and This Song about You But stellar singles from his debut.... |

Fans have been saying artists release the wrong singles from albums for decades to be honest. It's just individual opinion.

A lot of it is down to the record label. An artist can see what they want as a single, but ultimately the final descision is down to the label. Unless you're someone like Beyonce.

You're right about Rebecca and The Sats!
Also 1D should release Tell Me A Lie or Stole My Heart next. |

Some artists don't even care what singles they have. In the eyes of a lot of artists it's all about their albums, and their record labels just do all the advertising. The artists just make the music.
Not saying that's the way it is for all of them, but for some of them I think that's the case. |

The labels choose the singles that they consider surefire hits, but the industry changes so rapidly with all the new trends that the makings of a smash are never the same.
Maybe if they stopped aiming at solely radio airplay and started listening to what the artist's fanbase wants ( because the single choices never seem to satisfy the fans, who should be the priority), then the single releases would be more beneficial for the album sales and more indicative of the album's concept ( in case there is one )

Sometimes singles are chosen just because of their titles! (I'm not making that up) A song title that looks good against the artist's name. It doesn't matter if the song isn't the strongest.
Other considerations are - lyrics, whether there's more controversy or a 'racy' content to them, whether they want an upbeat or a chilled single, whether the theme of the song suits the artist's current PR image, or if they know a good video can be made with a particular track even if better songs are available. |

i think rihanna has made a few mistakes with the singles choices for talk that talk, obviously we found love was rightly chosen but i feel roc me out or drunk on love would of been better options than you da one, talk that talk or where have you been (i still love all these songs though)

With the type of acts you listed it's more the fault of the record labels, who make all the decisions. Men in suits may know loads about making money, but they know very little about music.

I don't think Hold It Against Me should have been the lead single from Britney's Femme Fatale. I like the song but I think I Wanna Go, How I Roll or Gasoline would have been better lead singles.
Lady Gaga's You & I should have never been released. It was a terrible song. I think either Americano or Scheisse should have been released instead. |

To be honest it's all personal opinion. Loads of my favourite artists release songs that I don't deem to be the best on the album, but thats just my taste. I don't think Madonna should have released GI2M and Miles Away from Hard Candy. I also think Pet Shop Boys make pretty poor singles choices. |

Basically it's so subjective even the artists (that's pretty much any artists) own fans can't agree on what is the best single to release so how can anyone say what is right and what isn't
It's all just a personal opinion |

interesting thread, but I think it is either the record companys thinking (wrongly) about which single is will be popular. I wish more artists like recently Rihanna asked their fans what single to release as surely the favourable single will fare better in the charts?

The general thing they're doing is what they've done for ages, but the internet ruined it for them.
Lead single is usually a good track, commercial, meant to peak interest for the album. 2nd track is meant to get album sales, so it's most likely to be the obvious "People will buy this" track. Anything after that is fodder. 3rd and 4th are used as a way to go "This is ok, buuut if you want to the good stuff, spend 10 times as much on the album instead.." For example: Born this way was catchy, Judas was typical Gaga/Redone, TEOG/Hair weren't meant to be singles, but just to say "Buy the album if you want it", You and I was because Gaga wanted it and it had Brian May, and Marry the Night was the original choice for lead and the end of the album campaign. Scheisse, Bloody Mary, Americano etc weren't released because it means people would buy them without having to buy the album.. However, since Itunes etc have come into play, people can buy the stand alone tracks they want anyway, without buying the album, so it negates all of that, which is the reason sales have dropped - not illegal downloads - and it's also the reason that the tactics previously used by record companies to shift albums isn't working so well anymore. The best thing to do for single choice is hold an opinion session with 100 fans (in the case of people like Madonna, Gaga, 1D, Bieber, Britney etc that have very actively involved fans) and have them listen to the album a few times, and vote on four choices of singles, and obviously the top 2 would be selected to be singles, and then the other 2/3 singles can be selected by the artist or the record company. Holding off on the release of an album a bit longer is also something they need to consider. Release the album to the fanfare that Born This Way had with a media blitz, but not with a single release because it'll hurt the single's success. They're just behind the times, that's all. |
