I have a small salmon fillet, not worth putting main oven for it - I think I could microwave it - but not sure for how long and what power - never cooked fish in it before

can anyone help please?

Personally I wouldn't bother. Wrap it loosely in tin foil with some salt and pepper. If you've anything that'll go (lemon for example) some of that too. Main oven, 15/20 mins at about 190 and it'll be lovely. Surely you're not having it on its own anyway?

Fish done in the microwave can be lovely. This is based on my microwave which is only 650 watts. If it's skinless season it and place in a shallow dish with a little water. Cover it and cook on full power for 1 1/2 mins. Let it stand for a minute and if it needs anymore time just give it short blasts till it's done. Try not to overcook it.

If it is a small piece it would be far easier to poach it than microwave it, I think. Too easy to overdo it in the microwave.

Bit of milk, whatever herbs you like and some onion, it'll be done in a couple of minutes. I've poached many a whole salmon that way, in ten or so minutes, depending on the size of the fish.

Poaching is great....always do it that way when I make a fish pie then use the milk for the sauce. I agree about the microwave being too easy to overdo it....things seem to "turn" so quickly in a microwave, one minute they are raw and the next second they are overcooked.

I've microwaved a piece of salmon before. Put it on a plate and cover with clingfilm or another plate and give it two minutes, then let it stand and check the middle for doneness.

Brush with oil, season it and grill 4/5 mins a side.

Fish such as salmon can be put in a microwavable cellophane type bag on a bed of finely sliced vegetables, sealed and microwaved as a main meal in itself.

My mum always microwaved salmon. She had every Betterware dish known to man, so she could always find a suitable dish to microwave salmon.

oven baked it in foil, with lemon/lime juice and black pepper - was delicious, cooked 2 fillets, so will have one to make sandwiches tomorrow.

I'm not allowed to sit in my wheelchair at moment, have to stay on bed-rest so OH is doing the all the cooking - my tea tonight was salmon fillet, new potatoes with mint, and peas - I am impressed, it tasted really good

Glad it was good!

I've come to this thread late, but in case of any help, I've often microwaved salmon and I've found that if it's a natural uneven cross section, ie shaped a bit like a hump back bridge rather than the sort of rectangle you often get, the edges go over cooked and 'frizzy' as the middle cooks. For obvious reasons I guess! Poaching, pan frying and oven cooking seem more forgiving of this shape.

This is actually my preferred way to cook salmon these days. It's lovely and moist, and the house doesn't smell fishy afterwards.
