I don't know why people think that I have the faintest idea of how to answer such questions (it may be because I know how to spell Google ), but I have been asked whether music by Ke$ha would be considered safe for a 10-year old girl. Personally, I suspect that nowadays anything beyond Marvin and the Chipmunks would be unsuitable for any 10-year old, but that could simply be my age showing.

Any knowledgeable replies gratefully accepted.

Personally, I don't think her music would be suitable!

I love Kesha, I have the Animal/Cannibal 2CD edition, and 90% of the songs are on the theme of partying with Alcohol, and sometimes drugs. I know a 10 year old may not wholly understand the alcohol references but it is quite focused on sex as well. The songs are catchy, and fun in spirit, but you run the risk of normalising casual sex and alcohol for a child who is only a few years away from being a teenager!

My 5 year old neice likes her though, but she doesn't understand much of the song, just the catchy bits in the chorus (She started singing "This place about to BLOW!" from "Blow" in the middle of an airport arrivals lounge)

Even though the topics are alcohol, drug, and sex based, most songs are these days. Personally though, I wouldn't purchase the album for a 10 year old, but you'd know the child better to decide.

Yes i would all the rude bits (the worst is $hit not much swearing) are usually censored/covered up anyway and album cover doesnt say explicit so yes. My brother is unaffected and fine after listening to her as well.

Really?

Take it Off?
Blah Blah Blah?
Dirty Picture?
They're the ones I think of off the top of my head that are quite sexual, then there are other songs that just have certain lyrics. I suppose if it doesn't have a Parental Advisory sticker then it's fair game, my version does have one though, I think.

Suitable? Why not, because 10 year olds hear music and think "Wow, I must do that" in some sort of hypno-robotic way?

I listen to Lady Gaga, but I've never wanted anyone's disease. I used to listen to the spice girls when I was 10, but don't think it lead to me calling my mother "mama" nor did it lead to me liking her one iota.

On top of that, I listened to Tina Turner in a car a little as a child - never blinked an eye at 'steamy windows', nor did I turn out to be a woman beater from hearing 'smack my bitch up'... or a pyromaniac from 'firestarter'.

Music is music, any misbehaviour from children whilst they're children or as they become adults is because of poor parenting. Don't blame Kesha's poor efforts for your own poor parenting.

I don't really think so....All of Animal/Cannibal is about alcohol/sex/getting hit on by old guys etc.....I'd say that the only moderately safe song is Tik Tok....:-/

Take It Off - Okay maybe the chorus
The others aren't bad at all really no worse than the Talk That Talk album for example

Singing about a guy touching her 'junk'?
I'd say that's quite a bad song for a child IMO.

It's fine for a 10 year old to listen to, provided they havn't been wrapped up in cotton wool all their lives. I know cholildren that age who enjoy her music and see it as nothing more than fun rhymes etc; They won't have a clue about the rude bits as they are more play on words than someone like Rihanna.

Most kids only listen to the chorus anyway and junk could mean their stuff. If it can be played on the radio then its fine imo.

Your Love Is My Drug - Glorifying drug abuse
Take It Off - Encouraging lewdness
Kiss N Tell - 'Acting like a slut when I was gone/You really shoulda kept it in your pants'
Blah Blah Blah - 'Show me where your d*ck's at/You're gonna be naked and I'm wasted'
Stephen - About coming on to her teacher
Party At A Rich Dude's House - 'I'm pissin' in the Don Perignon'
Backstabber - 'Shut your f*cking mouth'
Blind - 'I know you have a girlfriend/I'll call you if I need a hit'
D.I.N.O.S.A.U.R - 'You're just an old man/hitting on me what'
V.I.P - 'Yeah it's f*cked up/You're making me sick'

11/15 tracks are unsuitable so more than half of Animal. And I didn't even cover Cannibal.....not appropriate for a 10 year old at all imo. I like some of these songs, but I wouldn't play them to an impressionable child.

I know there are some silly non-crude songs, and even some lovely ones (Animal, Dancing With Tears In My Eyes), I do actually love the album! And like I said my 5 year old neice listens to it, but that was by accident, I didnt realise I should have turned it off when we were colouring one day. I don't see her turning into an alcohol, sex rampant, teenager based on hearing this album, but it did raise awkward questions (Why did she say that? What does that mean? etc).

I wholeheartedly agree that music won't effect a child and influence them too much, it should really be up to parents to control their behaviour, but I think a 10 year old could wait a few more years before being given a copy of such music. I hope that makes sense!

Really? A couple are but 11
Glorifying drug abuse? definitely not
I dont mind the odd swear word as im sure they would know a few now from the playground
Only 2 are a bit rude imo and it doesnt have an explicit stinker on the album cover either so i would say its ok but i
guess just differing opinions then.

I don't think Ke$ha uses drugs, and she definitely doesn't reference drug use in her music. Actually the whole point of "Your Love Is My Drug" is she's saying she doesn't need drugs, because she's in love.

Regardless, I'd say her music is more for 16+ year olds. Definitely not 10 year olds.

Well, I wouldn't like to see 10-year old girls trying to immitate Ke$ha's style or sing along to her lyrics ( it's not about cursing, it's about the content in general that isn't particularly shocking tbh, but just not what a 10-year old should be singing). That said, it's really not Ke$ha's fault that kids tend to identify so much with their favorite artists.

Kids from 9 to 12 years old are a strange audience anyway. They're not teenagers or little kids anymore, so I don't know exactly what they should be listening to...

What have the poor kids done to deserve that kind of punishment?

Kidding aside, as I said, 10-year old kids have begun to move on from Disney style songs, so I guess some harmless pop would be the most appropriate for that age. Disney imo suits much younger kids, probably around 7 or 8 years old.

Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Justin Bieber, 1D, Big Time Rush etc are all huge in the 9-14 market still and they are all pretty much Disney/Nick artists...

I don't think Ke$ha is really suitable for the majority of that age bracket, a large majority of her songs are just not suitable for young kids....In fact a relevant example would be Miranda Cosgrove (a Disney artist) who recorded Ke$ha's song Disgusting for her album, but had to change quite a few of the words because it contained references to drug use/date rape and violence...

I just don't think she is really that appropriate. Of course every child is different but should she really be a role model for children? I don't think so.

To be honest, I think we underestimate kids. We think any exposure to something dirty, rude or even a little bit controversial will turn them bad and in 3 years time they'll be getting wasted and having underage sex all because they listened to Kesha, or Rihanna etc.

I was exposed to all kinds of music growing up as I have an older brother. Stuff like Eminem's lyrics and a lot of rappers lyrics I used to hear my brother playing, and I definitely do not go around swearing, taking drugs, getting wasted or sleeping around. The only songs that have influenced me in any way are songs of empowerment, being stronger and getting over things.

I mean I remember being young when I saw Eminem's video of him kidnapping his girlfriend and putting her in the boot of the car...but it didn't influence me to kidnap someone and kill them!
