I would now honestly say that Katy Perry has overtaken Lady Gaga in terms of popularity, in fact, I'd say that Gaga's fallen behind Rihanna too. What about Adele though? I haven't a clue so please help me out? It's not about who's sold the most in total, it's about who people are more in tune with and which artist is most likely to pop first into someones head when they hear 'female singer'.

My Top Five would be this:

1) Katy Perry ( I'm NOT a Katy Perry stan people :sleep:E)
2) Rihanna
3) Lady Gaga OR Adele.
4)Lady Gaga OR Adele.
5) Beyonce ?!?

No to Taylor, she's not very in your face outside the U.S at all. I don't hate her though.

I would agree with you on most of your points espicially the Lady Gaga one where her popualarity is declining as the novelty wheres off. But for me it has to be Rihanna as she holds the title for longest consectutive weeks at number one for any female artist (Umbrella- 10 weeks) and is the only female singer to have 5 number one singles in 5 consecuative years.

No fancy order

Katy Perry
Beyonce
Lady Gaga
Rihanna

They are today's top females

I have not included Adele because Adele has only proved what a force she is with one album, while Britney spears is doing good but her album sales are getting lower and lower and she can just about get a hit all around the world. She didn't have a monster hit with Femme fetale and she has become a weaker force in the charts since her Blackout era.

Britney only sells because shes Britney, which makes me think that she'll have a Madonna career and sell due to her being who she is not through talent or good songs. Hold it against Me was successful globally.

She won't have a career like Madonna sadly. Tour wise yes, album and single wise no. Britney isn't taking risks. Love the girl to bits and am a huge huge fan but her music isn't nothing groundbreaking or different to what is currently out. While people like Madonna are going beyond what the current Dance music is, Britney tends to even go lower or just do what others are doing. The only elements of Femme fetale that were different were the Dubstep elements she introduced to the american market.

IMO they're all on the same level of fame. Their tours sell out and they earn millions. Overall touring Gaga and Beyonce are the biggest.

Lady Gaga is on a downward spiral when it comes to the charts nowadays. Since Judas, in fact since BTW, she hasn't had a big hit. If you ask anyone to name any Lady Gaga song they'll instantly say songs from the Fame Era. Edge of Glory underperformed but You And I , and MTN just flopped HARD. Only thing that keeps in her in the limelight are her videos. Not even her outfits- they're just unimaginative now. As for Britney, she is a household name now, but her lack of fan interaction ( I know she's got Twitter) is just ridiculous and it's really holding her back.

Depends on what you mean by popularity really...

But in my opinion, despite her 6 million plus selling "flop" and an apparent public backlash, Lady Gaga is the only 'superstar' out of them. She's the only one who is massively popular WORLDWIDE and could, and is, selling out arenas. Obviously, if Adele announced a worldwide tour right now, it would be massively popular but only on the back of the success of 21, her only hit album which has only spawned 2 hit singles. Also, Adele doesn't really have the versatility of Gaga, who can perform a massive routine to a big pop song whilst sitting down to the piano to perform a ballad straight after.
Rihanna and Katy Perry are also very popular, but only for their singles in terms of the world. They don't sell many albums whereas Gaga and Adele do.

To put it simply, I think the only artist who could have an entire talkshow focusing on them is Lady Gaga. It's hard to have a proper sense of judgement when you read these forums and even the comments on articles because a lot of us are very interested in music and usually have quite strong opinions. The general public don't really have that however, so you have to remember that.

But i would say it's:

1. Lady Gaga
2. Rihanna
3. Adele
4. Katy Perry
5. Beyonce (but only due to her last album)

Born this way the album is second best selling album of the year, and Born This Way the song went to number 1 all over the world and is the fastest selling song in itunes history. Judas and Edge of Glory went top 10 in most territories. You and I went top 10 in the US, which is the biggest and pretty much the only consumer of country music, which the song was. And by the time Marry the Night came out, most people who like Lady Gaga will have already bought the album or bought it on its own long before it was an official single.

I find it quite funny that people are so quick to criticise Lady Gaga and declare she's a flop just because she isn't number 1 constantly. Born This Way isnt the most commercial sound and deviates quite a bit from her original sound, so it's not hard to imagine some people won't like it. But when people like Beyonce, Britney or Madonna have flop albums/singles, people don't say anything which I find quite frustrating. People need to get some perspective.

And I'd say Britney is flopping because she can't sing, can barely dance anymore, and has extremely unimaginative videos.

Yeah her last tour was very successful but I'm just thinking about now, based on '4', would people be cramming to see it, in comparison to the others? Although now you mention, i did forget about her Glastonbury performance which was pretty popular. But I think she got pretty much the same reaction that any of the other four would have got, even Rihanna and Katy Perry who aren't the best singers but know how to put on a good show

I agree Lady Gaga has fallen behind and people have grown tired of her but is still probably not chart wise more popular than KP who is catching up though.

Rihanna (can't deny it 3 multi platinum albums in a row and a shed load of number 1's and sold out tours to boot)
Adele
Lady Gaga
Katy Perry
Beyonce

Despite 4 not being a huge seller, that wouldn't mean it would affect her tour.

I'd say there probably quite equal but I'd tie Adele, Gaga and Rihanna at number one with Katy Perry and Beyonce just behind. I just think the Adele, Gaga and Rihanna are more popular at the moment. I wouldn't think there's much of a diffence though they all have strenghts in different areas.

It kind of would less people buying it generally means less seeing it as most wouldn't know or care about the record enough to hear it live.

It doesn't work that way all the time. Madonna's hard candy was hardly a huge seller but the tour is a record breaking tour for a female artist. A lot of fans blast that era but it didn't stop them paying money to see it. Most people likely go to see the person do the oldie hits or see them because they like the artist regardless of the album they are promoting.

Right now I think:

1. Lady Gaga
2. Adele
3. Rihanna
4. Katy Perry
5. Beyonce

of my lifetime (I was born in the early 90's) I'd say:

1. Britney Spears
2. Christina Aguilera
3. Beyonce
4. Madonna
5. Rihanna

Nah, not really. Acts like U2 and The Rolling Stones don't really sell nowadays, however, their tours sell out like crazy

I think Nicki Minaj is on the cusp of something however.

Always baffles me that a 4 million seller "flop" that is Hard Candy, only sold 1.8 million units less than Gaga's "hit" Born This Way! And for a woman who had been in the business for 25 years when Hard Candy was released, AND taking into consideration that Madonna will still likely be selling records in ten years time, I'd say that all the female artists in the list in this thread are largely "of the moment", which makes Madonna possibly the most popular female artist today. It is only ageist attitudes that dismiss her as irrelevant as far as the youngsters are concerned.
