They have officially done it, with great sales for an album with no Top 10 singles yet. Well done

Technically it was a top 10 single, but due to billboard's silly non sales rules it wasn't. So IMO they did break the UK top group debut position sales wise at #9. Billboard...need to change their rules. Sales come first. Sod airplay. It keeps you up there, but if you're at #3 on itunes you CANNOT be #1 on the charts. You clearly are NOT the most popular act/song of the week from sales. SMH. Draconian foolishness.

Didn't they make the chart more complicated now that they count Spotify streaming on the Hot 100 chart?

Oh God YES....SMH. What is up with them. Just bloody sales! But streaming can be a part too, as it's a big part of music popularity. I don't mind that but radio airplay can't be taken into account. If so, we'd have Domino, Gotye, Emeli and Olly Murs at the top of the singles charts for half the year It's not fair IMO. Radios choose what to play, not the public.

Congrats to the lads on a great achievement.

One drawback is Simon Cowell has an even bigger smile right now.

So happy for the boys!
And whether you like their music or not - you can't this away from them.
Let me say this again FIRST UK group to DEBUT at #1 in the US.

I don't think even Simon expected this...

About the only talented people in the whole 1D project.

That is an irrelevant comment. I am sure HUNDREDS of successful acts in the past havent been that talented. It is what the buyer LIKES that counts. I could go through my cd/record/download collection and find plenty of songs and acts that have done well through little talent. So what? If they produce a product you like ( even if most of it is done by a backroom team) then you buy it and listen to it. It is really that simple.
I think they have come along with the right looks, right sound and right team at the right time and they will soon be MINTED. And bloody good luck to them.

I agree with you. I am not a fan in any shape or form but can appreciate what an impressive feat it is to top the Billboard Chart.

An achievement. But the hard work put in must be acknowledged as well as the talent. I think that's what the person meant. And they benefitted from hype and frenzy than anything else.

That has happened since Bill Hayley in the 50's.

It's funny that even Rihanna (who I like) hasn't had a US #1 album yet and now the boys have with their debut. I mean since Umbrella she has been EVERYWHERE.

And I'm sure The Spice Girls had much more promotion with their US launch than the boys? (They did top the charts I know but not in their first week)

I'm by no means a fan (they aren't exactly aimed at my demographic/age so that's not a surprise, lol) but good luck to them. It really is quite an achievement what they have done and continues the Brit invasion.

RIhanna has had longevity though. One direction won't.

Agree with this, but it does show the way music is going more in the USA. Look at the top money makers to see it is mostly a teen market.

Cracking america and having longevity don't always mean they are gonna combine

Plus boybands have a shelf life of 4/5 years
