True, but Rihanna hasn't really had a break - especially with the last two eras.

We will just have to wait and see with 1D.

I think they said that after the US they'll be touring Australia and then back to recording their second album in the summer.

Congrats to them, i personally don't see the appeal but obviously they are doing something right.

Everybody knows that teenage girls control the charts, so it's no big surprise that this has happened. Teenage girls buying the album because they fancy the singers, that's all this is.

Congrats to them

How is their single doing?

Congrats to them,I wouldn't call myself a fan but I do like 1 of their songs, they always come across really nice aswell in interviews & are just a bunch of young lads living their dream, good luck to them I say and wish them more success in the future

Well Max George can stick that in his pipe and bloody smoke it! Not really into their music, but happy that they are doing well and 'flying the flag' and all that jazz.

Not a fan but thats some achievement, well done to them.

Would be nice if their music wasn't total balls though. People talk about them 'flying the flag' for us, but they don't exactly represent British music in a good way, do they?

If people think I'm being a miserable snob then I apologise for being a fan of decent music.

What TW have said has been taking way out of proportion. They have repeatedly said in interviews in the US that they have spent lots of time with 1D lately and that they are like "our little brothers".

Congratulations to them but their album hasn't sold that well in the UK, I thought it would be past a million but apparently not.

Makes no difference really, they have this record now regardless.

Radio one has been ruined by this band, I can't listen to it any more - switching to radio two until the one direction hype dies down (shouldn't be too long in the fickle world of teenage sycophanticism)

There has been a lot of hype about One Direction,
entering at No.1, in the USA Album Chart.

1) It was very hard to do that in 1964, when The Beatles
became big in the USA.

2) It was so hard to manage, that no Artist entered at No.1,
in the USA Album Chart, until 1975, when Elton John did so
with 'Captain Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy'.

3) Even thoughThe Beatles first USA Album, ('Introducing
The Beatles'), did not enter at No.1 there, it climbed to No.2
& spent 9 Weeks there - at the same time as their 2nd USA
Album was at No.1 - 'Meet The Beatles'. Their 2nd USA
Album was No.1 for 11 Weeks, & their 1st Album was at
No.2 for 9 of those 11 Weeks.

4) And, in April 1964 The Beatles held Positions 1 to 5
in the USA Singles Chart.

5) One Direction have sold 176,000 to enter at No.1 in
the USA Album Chart. It is no big deal. There are
313,200,000 people there. It is the same as selling about
34,955, to go in at No.1 in the UK. It is hardly gigantic Sales.

6) Not when you consider that in 2000, the USA Boy Band,
'N Sync, sold 2,400,000 USA copies - in a Week - to go in
at No.1 with their 'No Strings Attached' Album.

7) One Direction are not even huge in the UK. Their
Album could not get higher than No.2 here.

8) The hype around them has got really silly. The Beatles
had 15 UK No.1 Albums - 174 Weeks at No.1, & 19 USA No.1
Albums - 132 Weeks at No.1. One Direction are not going
to get anywhere near such success.....

Well we cant compare them just yet cos obviously the beatles we're around for ages whereas them its only been their first year. Let 1D have more albums / singles just like the beatles then we'll see. But for the mean time well done to them. Its a MASSIVE achievement

Zeus555 - yes they had MASSIVE hype, but they have this record now. Like it or not.
But we will have to see what happens in the next few years, they have had a great start! This is just based on one album, one era. The boys are 18-20, they have the time to achieve more.

This is pretty amazing considering how young they are. Not a big fan myself though. Congrats

Of course you can't compare them to the beatles. Different era. Different record sales and the way the charts work. The only difference IMO is both bands were in the right place at the right time to make it happen oh and both bands have likeable funny personalities which translate well in interviews.

But what they have achieved in today's terms is pretty spectacular. (as is the Wanted's achievement!) It usually takes a very long time to make a break through in America but they have managed a number one album with a 10 day tour supporting BTR and a couple of weeks signing albums and visiting record stations. Spin it however way you want it is a BIG acheivement and why the media are making a fuss about it
