Have I got a faulty DVD player

I have recently purchased a Philips 612 DVD player, and have noticed a slight flickering on the TV screen during play back of discs. Having never owned a player before I am unsure as to whether this is normal (like you get when playing back videos) or whether they may be a problem with the machine. Can anybody help? I have hacked the player using a code off the internet - could this be the reason? The player is connected to the TV using scart leads. Thanks for any info.

Have you tried moving the scart plugs about while playing the DVDs? scart leads or scart sockets can work loose and cause intermittent connections - maybe flikering or sound cut out.

Also a scart socket in the TV may have become loose, if the solder fixing in place has become poor.

If you have another TV with a scart socket try the player on that to see if the same problem occurs. This will help identify where the fault lies.

Thanks for the reply. I have checked the scart leads to make sure they have not worked loose, and they seem okay. However I am using leads that are a couple of years old, I will try swapping the leads about with other equipment to see if that makes a difference, and if not I will exchange the player for another. Thanks anyway.

My daughter has the Philips 622 and I havn't seen any flicker problems on it.
Incidentally was the flicker evident before you applied the multiregion hack?

Not really sure what you mean by flicker... is it when watching a particular DVD or on all DVDs? Certainly a good quality DVD should look better than a well-tuned/digital broadcast picture - so if you don't get similar problems with that then something is amiss somewhere in the system.

Have you got it wired through a VCR? The macrovision copy protection system can mess up the picture if it's played through a VCR, which I think manifests itself as a flicker of some kind.

somtimes playing american dvd's can flicker tv's like it was a 60hz mode for a console - which flickers slightly at the top...
but i just ignore it and it does not damage my set. i think. i hope.

Thanks for all your replies. I applied the region hack more or less as soon as i bought the player, so am not able to say whether it was evident before. The DVD player is wired directly to a Panasonic TV via a scart, and doesn't go anywhere near the video so I don't think it will be a macrovision problem. The DVD's I am using are all region 2 therefore it isn't a problem with American discs. I have decided I am going to return the player anyway, as the picture quality isn't much better that I receive when playing videos. I think I'll try a Panasonic player.
