This phrase really irritates me now as the term now appears to be used solely to describe someone who society is supposed to find repugnant but has an amazing voice dance routine etc., and reading on DS about Jonathan Antoine being called this years SuBo and receiving jeers from the crowd and a dirty look from simon just shows that this year is no different.

Why is every act who is not conventionally attractive but can sing being called the next Subo? i would hate to be called the next Subo, not slating her i think she is incredibly talented but the phrase is awful, as by using it they are saying that you should not have that talent as your are not what society believes is attractive and for the judges to "act shocked" that someone who looks a certain way could even have talent is quite disrespectful as they are agreeing with society that they shouldn't be able to do it.

What do you guys think?

This is what is turning me off BGT

It's so fixed yet they make it out like she/he came from the heavens.

Agreed

Really it should be about the Voice - not whether someone look good/ or is a social misfit/ outcast...

If only there was a show on like that

Can I borrow your soapbox when you're finished? Cheers.

Two 17 year olds being used and the girl being abused for " good teli " just made me feel slighly sick
She was the fall guy in this set up .

I knew, as soon as simon whispered to the others "can this get any worse" (or words to that effect), that this was going to be a subo moment.

It's not a subo moment, they portrayed Paul Potts in exactly the same way in the very first series.

Yes, it was so obviously set up. What do they take us for?

Received "Jeers" from the crowd? really?

I can categorically state that they did not receive "jeers" from the crowd. I was THERE!!!!!

I feel sorry for the girl in the audience that they cut to when Charlotte and Jonathan first came out on stage - they showed her saying something to her mate and the implication was that she was less than impressed at his size.

Thing is that footage of her could have been taken at any moment or even in a completely different act, with editing there is nothing to say that her reaction shot was at Jonathan at all.

But now she will forever be included in youtube clips and show extract reruns, poor girl.

I guess that's the risk you run by being in the audience at these shows, you sign your rights away.

If you think back to the Subo Moment they did exactly the same with some audience member then, and the papers sought her out to ask her why she had been so dismissive of Subo before she had sung. Completely unfair.

Yes, who knows what order the whole thing is recorded in but edited to be shown? Hope that makes sense!

Ronan Parke from last year. He's clearly a major talent but is being protected from too much exposure because of his young age.

Yeah I agree that they should not do that. The 1:24 girl had her own global hate club and went into hiding. The term is now in the urban dictionary!!

Maybe the lad will see the clip and Simon's comment and refuse to sign for him

It was so obvious from Simon's identical reaction to this lad just before their performance that he was a great opera singer. Not outstanding, but very good indeed! I felt really sorry for the lass being humiliated by Simon at the end of the performance. I think this showed his nasty streak. He could easily have been more gentle with her, but chose to be malicious and harsh. Good on her for not giving him what he wanted.....an upset reaction.

I'd refuse to sign if I was like that lad and Cowell had whispered that about me.

He can't refuse to sign, Cowell Industries already owns him

He already has other videos on YouTube and he's a classically trained singer. He was dressed much better before, had his hair tied back, etc.
This was a definite set up. The ratings have been falling and they needed another Subo moment to get those ratings up, so they created one, but Subo was the real deal. Cowell lucked out and wants more of that.
Apparently people are falling for it though.

Yes, that crossed my mind immediately after the show. He looked quite dishevelled on stage and his hair was a mess : coincidence?

The producers are very hands on on this show and much of it is scripted in advance. Cast your mind back to Paul Potts' first audition when he appeared in a cheap M & S suit with no tie, when you would have fully expected a classically trained tenor like him to be wearing a tuxedo.

What happened to all those platitudes and speeches from Amanda and Simon after Susan Boyle first performed preaching to the public that we shouldn't judge a book by its cover?

People are just the same. Including Simon and Amanda who were acting all moralistic with their false platitudes and preachy soundbites to the public.

This show, just like The X Factor, seem to be all about mocking people who appear a bit different and judging people based on their appearance.

There was no reaction from the girl because she knew in advance what Simon was going to say.The show might as well be billed as a scripted "reality show"on a side note if I see one more teenage dance troop I'll bloody scream, they are as entertaining as circus clowns and ten a penny.

Yes, it was odd that she wasn't affected at all by Cowell's heartless comments. If she'd been a trained (to deal with disappointment) stage school kid, I could have understood it. It was as if they'd already had a chat with Cowell and he'd told them what he was going to say.

Not with Cowell but certainly with the production team. If I was the guy and I knew I was appearing on national TV, I would have smartened up my appearance, tied back my hair and wore the best clothes I could find. And yet he looked completely dishevelled like he had fallen out of bed five minutes beforehand, clearly operating under instructions from the producers to emphasise the rags to riches side of the story.
