2012 Review

So then, that's it for yet another year, so how would people sum up 2012. What did you like about it this year and what would you change for next year?

I've really enjoyed this series! I liked that Matthew and Jorgie were both fantastic from the word go and it wasnt just one person that we knew would win! Either of those two would of been worthy winners.

The best part about this series for me was the judging panel. They got along, there was no bitchy comments, and the marks and comments were construtive and not just said for badness. The three of them worked really well together. I was unsure how I would take to Louie but I absolutely love him. He was a fair judge and was funny. Robin was fantastic as always and Katarina is the best addition to the panel they could make. Really hope the 3 of them are back next year.

Next year I'd like to see less lifting, more skating.

2012 was a great series though. Cant wait for the tour!

I've liked this series. The twists (duel/ultimate skills) have spiced it up and we've seen some real improvements, as well as real shocks, like Jennifer's head cut and Sebastien forgetting the moves.

Overall, the whole series was good until the end for me. Jorgie has delivered week after week yet it seemed obvious from the moment he stepped onto the ice that Matt was going to win. It's just a bit dull now, seems like all that 'closest final ever' stuff was crap because it seemed destined for Matt to win.

But otherwise, good series.

Won't be remembered as a classic series

Very quiet on the main page which has sort of summed up how this series has gone

Matthew and Jorgie were miles ahead from the start and no-one else realistically had a chance

Some of the twists didn't really work out and I feel most of them were decided on the spur of the moment looking at the ratings and who was left in the competition

Live crowds were mild at best, they only seemed to wake up on a few occasions

If I were to grade this series, the best mark I could give it would be C- at best

Only between two all series and when the focus is more on the dangerous stunts and the injuries and not the other skaters, you know the show is in trouble

Agreed it's not been a classic series - it's had no wow performance from me as there is always one at least 1 per series.

The judges have been fantastic, T&D need let the professionals help with the choreography as that will help freshen things up, also it would have been nice to see some of the pro partners do routines during the series.

The first half of the series the programmes were too long - too many skaters, the programmes have far too much padding and too many adverts.

There have been some good journeys - Sam and Chico come to mind, some WTF moments, too many injuries, dangerous lifts and too much glossing over when things aren't as they should be - poor skating skills or a "floating headbanger" that was just a float spin.

Christine hasn't annoyed me as much as I though she would, Karen needs to be behind the scenes she looks like she is continually sucking lemons other than when she realises the camera's are on her. She can still give the skaters support behind the scenes when they come off - there's no need for her to sit there like Queen Bee.

I think overall it's been a very good series - maybe not as good as series 2/3 but I'm not sure DOI will ever top that. However for me i'd say it was the 3rd best series overall even if ratings don't reflect that.

Katarina has been a most welcome addition to the panel & will be hugely disappointed if she isn't back next year - didn't miss Jason at all. Great contestants - a shame that Seb & Chemmy didn't attract more popularity & Seb particularly had more to give.

And tonight we had IMO one of the best ever DOI routines in Singing In The Rain.

It underperformed, given the ability of the celebs this year. Jorgie/Mathew/Chemmy and Sebastien are all still waiting for the choregraphy for their great performance. Jorgie is potentially the best female they have had, but she's been stalled for the last month by weak choregraphy. The week 5 and 6 routines in the final were a bit of metaphor for the series.

The judging has gone seriously wrong. Its trying to make the show into a skating class while T and D are choregraphing something else. The result is the marking favours the males and ends up continully marking T and D's choregraphy not the performer.

Good series this year. I did miss Jason at the beginning but soon got used of the new judges. I think that they should bring back the required elements into each routine for next year and spend a little more time on choreography. Christine did well and I loved the dresses. They will have to think of something for Karen to do next year, it is not fair to leave her sitting in the corner like that throughout the series

I enjoyed it, I would have preferred it if Jorgie had more of a chance to show off her skating, however she has done so well, really happy that Matthew won though, he is amazing

It was ok but I didn't enjoy it as much as I did before. Louis Spence and Christine Bleakley ruined the show for me. I'd like to see some proper skating in the next series if the show returns.

Same.

I'd actually enjoy it more if they let the female celebs do their own thing and not be force fed to just look pretty in lifts and then be slated that they're not skating alone and relying too much on their partner.

Then I'd enjoy it .

They could at least have done the ultimate skills test earlier and actually shown that jorgie could skate the same routine as Mathew (even faster] early on. They did have lots of dancing spins and jumps into some routines but they just couldn't let her do some moves as pairs dancing in that showdance tonight and had to have her being lifted. Actually that may have been inherent in putting 3 couples out there for the show dance - they might have been better on their own for most of it.

It's been a good series, but I certainly haven't enjoyed it as much this year and I think that the show has been spoilt in an attempt to get more viewers. The contestants were very very good - but the emphasis on lifts and dangerous stunts spoilt it a lot IMO. And how many times did we need to see Jen kicking her own head, Matt with blood on his face and Sebastien in tears?

I do think the new-look judging panel was the best change they made this series, and hopefully they'll all be back! I think overall though, someone somewhere needs to accept that DOI will probably never attract the huge viewing figures of its heyday again, and just focus on making an enjoyable ice-skating show that the whole family can enjoy, with less emphasis on the drama.

I think that your post is a good one. I think it did try to add drama in where it wasn't needed such as focusing on the accidents on ice. They didn't need to add drama, just leave it as it is and let people enjoy the skating. Apart from that, it was good humoured all around and everyone did well. I like the fact that there was no fake rivalry between contestants and it didn't hog newspaper headlines of showmances and all the rest, leave that to X factor, BGT and SCD

Well said.

I thought it was a terrible series: certainly the one I enjoyed least.

They wasted Jorgie's potential. They wasted Jennifer's. And they would have completely wasted Chemmy's if they hadn't been worried about her being seriously injured.

The ultimate skills tests were horribly dull and eliminated the most unusual and potentially most interesting contestant, Sébastien.

The judges and T&D had different ideas of what routines should be like, and Louie's marking was much too subjective.

The shows were too long with too many ads; the camera work was terrible; and the twists just made DOI seem desperate.

Completely wasted Jorgie's potential especially in the final weeks. Could not believe how little skating there was in Jorgie's showcase routine. Entertaining? Yes. Lots of lifts? Yes. Lots of dance moves? Yes. She proved she could skate the previous week so why was she not allowed to skate. Every week she seemed to have to spend time practising difficult lifts to make the routine entertaining but I think she should have been allowed to develop her skating skills.

More skating, less dangerous lifts(they only interupt the flow of thevroutines) and MORE DANCING ON ICE!!!!!!

Quite possibly because they chose not to as judging from the VTs they had major input into the showcase routines i.e staging, lighting, costumes etc and we were told Matthew had a lot of input into the choreogrpahy for his routine so I would have thought the others would have done too.

Its possible therefore that Matt and Jorgie chose to concentrate on the off ice dancing and the showy lifts rather than doing a lot of skating and it seems most of the focus was given to the throwing of Jorgie by the pro males rather than anything else in the routine.

If T&D had a lot of input then maybe the fault is with them but if it was mostly up to Jorgie and Matt then its their own fault that the routine lacked skating even if T&D did devise it then if Matt and Jorgie weren't happy they could have suggested other things to put in the routine like Matthew obviously did and Dan and Jennifer did with one of their routine as well and got them one of their best scores.

Jorgie was so amazing in her first two weeks' performances and in Fallin', I thought she would surpass Clare, Suzanne and Laura, but it did not happen, largely because she was not given routines as good as Clare's, Suzanne's or even Laura's, and hence I got a sense of untapped potential. She definitely could skate (though perhaps she needed to bend her knees a little more.) It seemed like T&D were just mentally exhausted and had run out of ideas. (One thing I might mention is that Betty Callaway, their coach and mentor, had passed away in June 2011, so this might have affected them somewhat.)
