Yes - We expect several - No release dates announcements yet. I am awaiting the Humax offering myself (should be, I hope, a G2 / YouView box).

The Manhattan PVR which is due for release in May isn't a G2 version, that comes later. Sagemcom also will be launched but are delayed and Humax aren't launching until YouView is in place (crazy decision!), so probably next year for them. There are a few more to follow, but contracts not finalised yet.

A YouView box spec is a mile away from a freesat G2 box.

In some respects yes, but in others, they are going to offer competing services and what Freesat have lined up is pretty special if it works out.

You are a tease Ian.

Any idea if/when we'll actually see anything?

It's been over a year already...
http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1439021

...though, to be impartial, let's remember that YouView has been on its way for over three years...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YouView

I'm glad I bought myself a new STB when I needed one, rather than waiting for the "coming real soon" launch, which still hasn't come.

Cheers,
David.

So will the Humax box will offer both G2 and Youview? Or just Youview?

I don't think you will get anything on this until Humax annouce it but my guess is both. Given the YouView hardware specs - it will cost little to design in G2 specs but a lot for a G2 box to add YouView due mainly to the CPU and other requirements.

Given that the YouView hardware specs are a year old in two weeks I would guess that testing is quite far advanced..

It was suggested on the techradar site that YouvVew may be launching on 14 May http://www.techradar.com/news/televi...4-may--1068619

Both, unless Humax drop plans for YouView intergration. They have signed up to G2 and wouldn't be able to launch a new Freesat branded box if they didn't meet the required spec and expectations. The G2 spec ties up the manufacturers to certain services in the future to avoid previous problems of manufacturers just saying "no" (LG, Panasonic etc).

...I'm sure when I read those that they only referred to terrestrial (i.e. Freeview). I think I read on a news site (admittedly over a year ago) that it would be Freeview first, and maybe Freesat later. Has this changed?

...and did you see...

Humax are the YouView lead stb partner - so I can't see them dropping it.

You are correct - however it is simple for Humax to translate those specs to Saterlite. I would expect them to have built test platforms by now.

I also noted;
"What people are buying are connected TVs,” she said. “YouView will be a set-top box offer…[that] will have a valuable place for more sophisticated consumers.”

I wonder is that is a term for Sky or other subscribers?

YouView will only be available with a set top box, it will not be built-in inside television sets according to the Link, when I read the article

There are very few manufactures making sat TV receivers - The market is small - most homes want to be able to record - connecting a HD in a caddy to a TV, while a possibility for some, moves you away ftrom a pure TV solution.

Why not? My Samsung TV can access the iPlayer why not Youview? It might need a firmware update to make life easier. - Though with my slow broadband connection it will barely be useable any way.

Because the processor requirements demand much more power and ram - it calls for a computer spec rather than a TV.
It would price any TV way above the market price (so I think).

Running applications is what makes a big difference.

So I do not have FreeSat, but our building is about to get it.
So do I jump on the band wagon straight away, or wait for these new features?
My computer has an HDMI to the AV Receiver and that will not change as it serves my Media content, so though having a more capable box would be good and cool and everything. The real benefits would come from even slicker EPGs/Guides (ie non of this slow Humax current offering) and other such things.

Thoughts?

The Humax is not especially slow however I would wait until the next generation at this point if you have terrestrial TV.

I love my three Humax HD boxes, two are + boxes ( Freesat HD & Freeview HD ) and would add that i like the software that both have, but the freeview is a little better then freesat in looks .

But I feel the next for boxes is bring app's type service with internet tv to our TV on top better SD, HD and sound and more space to record.

It would also be great to see more boxes that bring both HD public services freeview & freesat together, so you have better choice in channels and recording from both on epg would be great, plus a PIP system would allow viewing on both platforms.

OK, looks like I might be waiting if the wait is not too long.
Do we have a Quarter they are aiming for?
