Alot of you guys seem to talk about this quite alot on Digital Spy Music Forum.

When an artist release the first single off a new album I might download the song depending how long the album is going to take too come out, but mostly once I own the album I never buy the other singles again because who would when you have the album

Sometimes. It depends. I reckon that's why Rihanna's last two have sucked chart-wise.

Exactly! You can only have so many hit singles off of a successful album!

The thing is that all the blogs and forums are more concerned about the singles tbh. They are thought to reflect the buzz and the popularity of the artist much more than the albums.

In this case, it's all about poor promotion

Maybe, but it's Rihanna. She's the biggest popstar in the UK.

Maybe, but it's Rihanna. She could record herself taking a shit, and it'd do well on UK radio. The last two singles didn't though.
You're right. This album campaign is not organized at all. I wouldn't rush to call it a mess, but it's one of her most poorly promoted. Maybe 'YDO' flopped on radio because of the beast that was 'WFL' and 'TTT' has been a bit dead on arrival tbh. It was released in January, yet she performed 'WFL' at the Grammy's and the Brits and she also has 'Take Care', 'Birthday Cake' and 'Princess Of China' on radio, so 'TTT' didn't have its time to shine. And they didn't shoot a video either...confusing!

I hope 'WHYB' salvages the era. Some promotion, a top notch video and she'll be better than fine

I suppose in today's world it's all about iPod's and beaning able to download that one song you like.

Yes, The Flood TT charted/sold well but then the album came out and the other singles couldn't go top 10 because of all the copies sold of the album.
For most you're either a singles band or an albums band generally speaking. You can have both aka JLS,1D,ed Sheeran,Jessie J but it depends on the volume sold of their album and why you could have a number 1 album and multiple top 10's. I'd say an album that sells 1.5million wouldn't have multiple top ten singles 21 by Adele had 2 and that was with all the copies sold as well.

In Adele's case that was XL's fault. It was a single, started rising on itunes, hit the low top 20 and then it was apparently cancelled as a single, then reannounced (I believe this was via itunes) and then it started to rise again and peaked at #11. Initially it looked like a dead cert top 10 as it was rising so fast, and then it took a random drop. As long as promo is on point, along with radio, all singles can do well (i.e 21, Thriller, Whitney Houston, Whitney, Mariah Carey etc). In the Uk though, it's odd, it depends on the strength of the song and timing.

If you prefer your music in MP3 form there's no reason to buy two of the same song. With a physical product it's different.

I used to love buying singles, even if owned the album. I loved the extra tracks, remixes, artwork etc. I don't buy single downloads though. I really don't see the point of paying to download a song that I already have ripped to my iPod. I have nothing to show for it.

It's a shame physical singles are pretty much a thing of the past. I'm have tons of MJ, Madonna, Garbage, Pet Shop Boys singles and trasure them all. I can't get that from artists nowadays. Katy Perry has released 7 singles from her latest album and only 1 was released on CD, and even that was just a crappy 2-tracker

I'll never understand people who buy a CD of an album, but then go and download the same album from iTunes What on earth is that about?!?!

Thread, not forum. And your thread was specifically about Coldplay, whereas this is about the purchasing of singles in general. Relax.

8-10 years ago before the digital era came in 2005 when the digital downloads started to make an impact, artists like beyonce, britney spears, christina aguilera, ashanti, usher, alicia keys, justin timberlake, jennifer lopez, etc, they all counted on physical singles and airplay now today artists like lady gaga, rihanna, katy perry and adele have to only count on digital downloads now and airplay does have an impact still but not like it use to. things have changed so much in the past 7 years or so.

Will young's album was no1 I think that's why jeaously is the only song that has done well from that album.
I agree about the old physical singles I still get old 90's singles from charity shops & carboots.

If an album has been a megahit (Adele, Take That) then obviously singles arent going to do that well.

Fans of flop acts often use the album sales excuse though - Matt Cardle springs to mind.

Actually he's done so badly because he's crap.

(He's co-signed to Syco and Columbia—or was anyway for his first album—and according to his rabid fans Columbia took charge of his career. He's already been dropped by Modest! Management, which is a Syco affiliate.)

America is a different kettle of fish really. Plus all Adele's singles from this album have gone to number 1 despite the mega sales of the album, so anything is possible.

No no no, he "left" is the official line. After all, why would anyone drop him - He's Doing Really Well.

It totally depends on if the album was successful. Some artists are good at selling albums whilst some are better at selling singles. So sometimes that can be why
