i don't think singles flop because we buy albums, i think it's actually the opposite way around. nowadays people pick apart albums via itunes and purchase only the singles they've heard from an artist rather than taking the time to listen to the whole album as one piece of work. when artists release albums they seldom release it from the perspective of it being a single body of work, and concern themselves more with how many radio-friendly singles they can jam onto one cd.

I always bought singles as a youngster and could'nt listen to a whole album from one artist.Now I much prefer a whole body of work and mainly only buy albums and only download the odd single.I think it did make a difference having the physical copy.

Depends who your market is. If your an album seller then you probably have a big hit with the first single of an album but then if your more a single seller like Rhianna and Katy Perry then your singles will still do well even after the album is released. Plus, at University we was taught that singles are there to promote the albums.

I suppose it's all down to what you can afford when I was younger I could only buy singles because I only got 5 pound for pocket money.

In the sixties, the biggest bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones released singles that were not included on LPs and so both singles and albums sold well. Today, artists tend to release several album tracks as singles. Kind of cheats the buyers, I think!

Turning Tables is the 4th best song on 21... so i dont know why it wasn't released as the next single.

It's a shame physical singles are pretty much a thing of the past. I'm have tons of MJ, Madonna, Garbage, Pet Shop Boys singles and trasure them all. I can't get that from artists nowadays. Perhaps Rhianna / her label at come to a point to believe everything she released will sell well.There's a point when even the most devoted fan will feel a little bit exploited though.It's all about respecting your fans.Shifting units - in music industry speak - has little to do with the artist / fan relationship.
