media recorder

I would like to record the occasional programme off sky for the in laws. I would prefer to this on to be on a usb stick.

Obviously I accept I would need some some intermediary before the usb stick, HD recorder etc.

Any cheap, easy solutions, I would prefer a one box slotion rather than connecting up the laptop to the sky box

Thanks

Yes, you're stuffed.

Seriously though, the reason you haven't had any responses is because there aren't any such devices, at least I haven't heard of any. If anyone knows of any I would like to know cos I wouldn't mind using one.
So you're stuck with linking your Sky box to a pc.

First you'd have to convert the scart output of the Sky box to poor quality composite (or better quality s-video but I'm not sure you can from the Sky box) using something like this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Switchable-S...3063721&sr=8-2

then link to the pc with something like this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/ClimaxDigita...sr=1-1-catcorr

For that kind of money maybe it's worth a go. For a few hundred more there are boxes to put between your Sky box and pc which let you record in high def.

Never tried it myself, for years I've been using a HDD/DVD recorder connected to my Sky box and burning programs to blank DVD-R discs, something like this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-DM...3065028&sr=8-4

far more convenient.

The now discontinued Grundig GUDB20USB3 Digital Freeview Set Top Box / 3 x USB Record Function would do what you seek. However the chancers are after £85+ for it where a few months ago it was a clearance item at around £30.

Cheaper is the Ex-Pro Scart Freeview Receiver & Recorder DVB-T Adapter Box (Amazon link).

I also use a HDD/DVD recorder (Pioneer) if I want to archive anything from TV or a PVR, connected via SCART to the device I'm recording from.

The OP wants to record Sky programmes, presumably from his/her Sky box. The device you linked to will only record from it's built in Freeview tuner. And I suspect the Grundig box is the same.

Neither of those devices allow recording from external inputs, so will not work with the Sky box which the OP wanted I am afraid.

Thanks for all the replies, I guess I will have to use a dvd recorder

Oh sorry I misread that as SkyNews! (which is on Freeview)
Does the OP want to record Sky branded (encrypted) channels or FTA (free to air) channels broadcast via the same satellites?
There are many generic satellite receivers that can record unencrypted channels (even HD) to USB HDD or flash drive (including SD card in USB adapter).

The OP said they would like to record off Sky for the in laws.
As far as I'm aware the type of receiver/pvrs you're talking about record in their own peculiar file format or require their own specific formatting of an external drive so that resulting recordings can only be played back through the pvr that recorded them and cannot be shared unless re-encoded on a pc into a more universally playable format.
