So....1 manufacturer is successful in updating most of their 3 phones to a software version that was out 1 month before all the Android manufacturers were even able to work with ICS on their multiple devices each....?

Your point being? There are 7 iOS devices, made by one company, which received the iOS5.1 update [3GS, 4, 4S, iPad, iPad 2, new iPad, iPod Touch]. The update was released in January.

With Android, there are literally hundreds of devices made my loads of companies - all with different specifications and hardware. Plus, Ice Cream Sandwich was only released to the majority of these companies at the end of January.

The other thing to note is that Android has had all the features of iOS5x for yonks anyway and ICS is bringing features that iOS5x doesn't even have. Thus, your original "Apple is best" implication in rubbish.

The one of the biggest selling points of iOS5 was it's Android stolen notification drawer....that and Siri, some chick that nobody needs.

Only one device has the 'full' upgrade to iOS 5.1 with all the features though. The others have received butchered versions with random features arbitrarily removed.

Infamous Android fragmentation at work. For a change it's Apple customers who got a choice if they wanted something or not. Must have been a strange feeling

I'm still running XP on this laptop.

I see no reason to have the 1 step forward, 2 steps back Windows 7 on it.

My Android has better hardware specs, more RAM, more CPU, more storage space, HDMI out without optional adaptors etc, when are apple going to upgrade to what my device can do?

At least with Apple you know what you are getting. With Android one is at the mercy of the OEMs when/if they decide to release an update for a particular model. Don't tell you do not want to update to ICS.

Come now, Android people - in this thread we pretend we're nonchalant about Android updates where in other threads we are foaming at the mouth for any scraps and morsels about an ICS upgrade...

As antsy as we get with the OP, it's worth remembering that 2% is a pretty poor stat when the OS has been out almost half a year. The Nexus S, a flagship Google phone still doesn't have ICS, and many of the updates from the likes of HTC, Samsung, Sony etc. seem to have taken forever whilst they seemingly systematically take out all of the cool looks of ICS and replace them with the standard Gingerbread-esque stuff they've been using for years. I'll happily concede the point that Apple users certainly get their updates in a far more timely manner than we do.

I never even upgraded my old GT 540 Android phone from 2.1.
So why do I need ICS?

Methinks only 512MB Ram also means it might be best to give it a miss.

for those who stick with the Nexus phones that are released yearly you get full unbutchered versions of every latest version of Android.

So. lets recap.

Yearly Nexus phones released.
Always the latest version of the software.

sounds familiar, eh ......

Oh .... plus with Android you get the added advantage of being able to choose a bigger/smaller/cheaper/silver/black/keyboard/Sense/Touchwiz/Blur phone if you'd prefer to have something slightly different from the yearly Nexus phone ....

what a stupid thread ....

This comment is sooo misinformed it's hilarious. A simple root and rom installation will get you up to the latest version on most devices (with added benefits such as OCing) something iPhone users frequently also do though with lesser possibilities through jailbreaking...

Most 'new' phones from manufacturers are getting ICS, GS2, Sensation etc....most of the phones that sold will get it. Maybe only the lesser selling ones will not get updated.

I don't bother with those though and go only for Nexus devices which are far superior to every other Android phone and get the latest updates from Google whenever they come out....those phones are better than the iPhone tbh, especially the Galaxy Nexus.

I have 4 various android powered devices all waiting for the ICS update, my apple devices all have been updated on the same day.
I thought that once the ICS update was completed that you could then update to jellybean when that came out, now reading about it that not is not the case and will again be device, and manufacturer specific......then when thats done, your network has to add and check if its okay to be installed.
For open source its a real slow process of release.
Unless you own motorola devices and they dont bother or appear to bother. Dumped both my Atrix and Xoom because of the lack of info and the possible, maybe attitude.

More likely to be people like my mother in law who, when iOS 5 came out, was still running the original 4.0 on her iPhone 4 as she didn't know how to do updates, or even that she could.

iPhone users do encompass quite a lot of former feature phone users where, let's face it, they never got firmware updates!

My S2 is a great phone. I'm in ICS now using a multi CSC XEU update (why its not actually out here in the UK itself I have no idea!)

but...

I'm sick of Samsung's poor support and greedy attitude. They seem to now smell badly like a classic Far-Eastern Company Giant with no care for the user- just how much crap they can shift.
They seem to be flooding the market with Galaxy clones and updates have been terrible. Other Android companies seem to be similar too.

The iPhone5 is now in production apparently and if the spec rumours are true, sounds very nice.
I'm kinda being pulled away from a possible future upgrade to a S3 or 4 and go Apple. Support for example is light years ahead.

I think if we were all fair and balanced this is about right. It is one of the downsides of Android, but it's true to say there are many upsides too.

Apple make something like £300 + profit from each phone +30% of every APP.
If Samsung make more than £65 I'd be surprised.

It's all got to be costed, including their 24 month UK warranty not even offered by Apple.
Upgrades on all devices, as we know are double edged swords.
