I never thought of Westlife as having great singing ability/voices, but I just noticed that Mark's voice is amazing! I like the way he rarely starts a song, but comes in later and sweeps across the song (if that makes sense!). His voice stands out even when the others are all singing-it's like it floats over them

Anyone agree that he sings better than the actual lead singer Shane?

I'm suspecting Westlife's tour manager doesn't share your confidence in Mark's 'vocals'.

Mark is technically the better singer, but he is less consistent than Shane. While Shane is almost always perfect in live performances, I remember grimacing at some of Mark's live singing over the years.

I know Westlife aren't thought of as having good singing voices, but behind the covers and the cheesiness and the lack of credibility, Shane Filan and Mark Feehily have brilliant voices.

They have very different voices, but it works well for them because they complement each other - Shane has a very natural ability to sing all sorts of styles (a very natural pop voice, very smooth, but he also does the 'swing' stuff well (although I hate it :P) and he also picked up the country style well when they did a documentary on country music). Then after a gentle pop start, Mark can come in and belt out some parts of a song. He has much more of an r'n'b or soul style to his voice I think.

I know he was caught out with miming as above, and to be honest I hate miming in general. But I think Mark struggles more live because it can end up more 'shouty' sometimes, and he also has much higher and longer notes. I know Westlife aren't famous for dancing, but they're very active on stage and it is difficult I imagine to hold those notes and breathe properly. It's not an excuse, but all in honesty, I go to see them to watch a show, both singing and the whole 'performance' and if miming means he can do that better then...so be it. I've heard Mark sing live over the years many times, so he can do it, but as iamstrong said, he is less consistent than Shane. It is incredibly rare to hear Shane go wrong live.

I think he'll go solo after Westlife, but I wouldn't be surprised if he goes in a very different style. Personally I prefer Shane's voice, I think he has one of the best voices in pop, but I love both of them to pieces.

For anyone who does want to hear them,

Westlife acapella (no one in particular, but it shows how well they work together)
On the Wings of Love (old B-Side from 1999, so forgive the cheesy pop, it was popular then ) - this is one of the songs that shows Mark's voice off for me.
Shane's voice stands out a lot on What Makes a Man, I think. And their cover of 'Angel' is beautiful, Shane's voice works so well for that. So I think Shane and Mark complement each other in that different songs and parts of songs show off their different styles.

I have over-analysed this far too much. I will probably kill the thread now. I like Westlife, apologies.

Just stumbled across this thread and I know it's old, so I do apologize for bumping it, but I just wanted to say that Mark is probably my favourite vocalist and just wanted to add my praise for him too.

Westlife's performance at The Proms last year, which was 100% live, was pretty incredible and showcased how talented they really are. I have to say the extra ablyb Mark has added to Flying Without Wings the last few years proves exactly why I think he's a world class singer. I totally understand why he wasn't the lead singer of Westlife (Shane is a great vocalist and I don't think he is even capable of singing off key, his voice is also more mainstream sounding), but he was the strongest imo. Since Brian left he has really got to shine on the Westlife discography. I hope he does bring out a solo album and at the very least gets a bit more recognition how good he actually is vocally. His songwriting is getting really quite strong too, Beautiful World & I Will Reach You are both brilliant songs... and it's also nice to see that he is involved with the vocal arrangements of a lot of what they do, like the full O2 blueroom gig and many of their tour sections. His solo song 'Talk me down' is also brilliant, the ending is just glorious and it's nice to hear Mark sing a bit lower too as he always get the high parts in westlife.

I adore Mark's voice, he is a brilliant singer and for me whenever Mark appears in Westlife's songs, he just takes the song to another level.

Hoping for some solo Mark stuff very soon.

Wow! I've never actually listened to that before as I'm not a fan of the song, but he sounds incredible!
