Define 'records'
Does records include albums, singles, video albums, remixes, etc. ? Or is it just albums?

a record = recording.... meant at first to discribe a gramaphone record (as above link) of varying sizes but now means any form of recording, so to include cd's, etc.

I personally would distinguise between 'vinyl' records & CD's myself - especially now vinyl has saw a little bit of a comeback.I wouldn't class a tape recording as a record either. |

Does it include downloads though as far as you are concerned.

I think owing to history, record is basically synonymous with album. CD, vinyl or download are just formats to release a record/album. I don't think it would commonly be used to describe video albums or singles. Though the resurgence of vinyl does mean quite a few singles are released on the format these days.
When people say blah blah has a new record out, I would think they're talking about an album and not specifically which formats it's available on. |

More or less this /\ /\ /\
I would say historically the genetic term for any recorded music is record irrespective of it being a single or an album. Vinyl ,CD,Download are just the formats to buy the record in The one that I find interesting is that everyone (including me) still talks about making a Video to go with a single etc.----- surely Video as such is dead

A record is a disc that is played via a stylus on a turntable. It contains music recordings as do compact discs, cassettes, mini-discs, 8-track cartridges etc. (some of you may have to google "8-track cartridge"
) When someone says that an artist has a new 'record' out what they are referring to is a single or album and quite possibly with no regard to the format . A format is personal choice anyway - you will make your selection based on what is available. Basically it's a new release: a track or a collection of tracks (album / mini-album). When record shops stopped selling records completely we still called them record shops rather than a music shop. A music shop was somewhere to buy sheet music or a guitar. |
