Who would you regard as being a 'household name' in the UK?
Most are all relatively new artists but who ( can be more than one) has gone further than the rest to become a household name?
NOT IN ANY TRUE ORDER 1) Jessie J 2) Adele 3) Olly Murs 4) Leona Lewis 5) JLS 6) Tinie Tempah 7) Will Young 8) Cheryl Cole 9) Emeli Sande (?) 10) Your pick |

I'd say Leona Lewis as she came to our attention through X Factor, so people got to see her become successful and were talking about her.
Cheryl Cole, only because of the huge hype machine that surrounds her. Adele because it seems the whole cuontry (apart from me) has her second album.

The biggest one of all, and known by all ages... Kylie.
She's appeared for many years (acting) on TV as well. The others mentioned are too much of a niche, many who have commented on this thread this assume that all of the population is under 30 years of age, as they probably are too. |

Adele at #1... no artist is played more on the radio than her.
Also now has the 6th highest selling album ever http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...United_Kingdom following her would be Rihanna, Jessie J (especially now with The Voice), Gaga |

She was one third of the biggest selling girl group of the 90's, and has had a phenomenal solo career. Jessie J has only been around a couple of years and a lo of older people will not know who she is. |

Assuming we're talking relatively new artists...
I'd say Gaga's relentless media coverage over the past few years gives her the edge over the others. For those who aren't tapped into todays music (i.e. older generations), they'll see her in a meat dress on the news or see her in an egg across tabloids...which will obviously catch their attention. I know that my Grandparents (in their 80s-90s) are aware of her, whereas they don't know who Adele/Beyonce/Rihanna are. I'd say Adele is next, then maybe Amy Winehouse. Her look is iconic enough and her celebrity infamous enough to get her easily recognised across generations. After that, I'd say Beyonce and Rihanna. Then Cheryl Cole. |

Why only new artists listed? There's thousands of artists/bands that are known in virtually every household...
Anyway, if we're to go off the biggest... i'd say these are the big names. Queen The Beatles Abba Oasis Michael Jackson Dire Straits Adele Pink Floyd Those names put everyone else in the shadow. Taken from the biggest selling albums, most people would have to have their albums. |

I thought the OP meant the ones from his/her list.
In general terms, Beyonce, Gaga, Rihanna are all household names. |

Who are Pink Floyd?
No one will remember your Rihannas, Gagas, Bieber etc. because the music won't appeal to future generations... that's what truly makes artists. At the minute... todays mainstream artists are just the next batch of James Blunts, Justin Timberlakes, Spice girls etc. Come back when you know a real credible artist

Adele without a doubt, maybe Jessie J. I also think because of his success at the Brits Ed Sheeran should also be a household name, as well as the late great Amy Winehouse

Adele is a household name
Olly Murs, JLS, Alexandra, Leona, Cheryl, Will are all household names because of the X Factor / Pop Idol Jessie J will probably become a houshold name due to The Voice. Tinie Tempah isnt, Emeli Sande? i barely know who she is. |

Of singers from my generation I think the only one's my parents know of are Britney, Beyoncé (only because my mum keeps asking "Did her baby end up being an ugly Jay-Z baby in the end?"), Adele, and Alesha Dixon (but that's only because her MC Harvey's mother is a family friend). I think they may have heard of GaGa but I don't think they'd be able to pick her out from a crowd of wacky singers.

Adele definitely. And surprisingly Jessie J. Mum is sick to death of her haha. She tried escaping Adele on the music channels, only to find Domino being played on 3 seperate channels at the same time.
Then people like Beyonce, Rihanna, Leona Lewis, Bon Jovi (household name in any country ) I'd agree with the OP's list a part from Emeli Sande and to an extent Tinie Tempah

I'd agree with this, everyone knows Alexandra because of Hallelujah and Leona for Bleeding Love, plus Olly and JLS are pretty massive acts in the UK...

They have 8 #1 singles and 2 #1 albums between them so I would say so.

What are the figures though? Anyone can have a number 1 if the sales are that low.
Olly also sold pretty decently with his singles/albums... |
