Fresh bread in Birmingham

Does anybody know any bakers where I can get a decent loaf of bread, homemade not factory baked?

Preferably in the city centre or Handsworth area.

Thanks

I'm not sure about Handsworth but in Sparkhill and Small Heath there are a few Kurdish bakers who do fresh bread at least daily and I'm pretty sure there must be a Polish bakery somewhere near the city centre. There was a Lithuanian deli under one of the old arches next to Great Charles Queensway a couple of years ago but I haven't been down that way for a while so it may have gone.

Only one place here sells decent bread and, the others are supermarkets stuff. Shame really the bakers are all gone, just like green grocers and fishmongers. we do have a fishmonger in our market, but they are the only one, still got a load of butchers.

Chleb Polski is the best bread in the supermarkets. It is natural and has no preservatives.

I make my own bread with ease. Tomato is my favourite.

Nope, still here in Herefordshire. i suppose i should have said Hereford in my post, but since it says Hereford as my location on my info, I should think you would have worked out I am still here.

Brum is way too big for me to live in, it is ok for a day out, but I could not live there.

Had my fair share of making bread and i still do make it now and again, easier with the Kenwood as it makes kneading easier, but still not as good as by hand. the problem is that having both my wrists broken makes it painful for me to knead for any length of time.

But the post is specific to brum so why comment.

I've not lived there for some years but there was a good Jewish bakers near Five Ways, did it go with the new development? Another in Small Heath and one on the Moseley road, are they still about.

Gee's on Pershore Road seems to be the only Jewish deli/bakery now. I haven't seen on in Small Heath but unless it's on Cov Rd I wouldn't see it.

Hello OP

My OH and I bought some bread on Colmore Row - it's near the Sainsburys store.

I can't remember what the place is called, but I would class it as a 'Boutique Bakery'

And the lady who served us was gorgeous.

But not as gorgeous as my OH, obviously!

Notice when you go on holiday to lets say europe you can find fresh baked bread in any town, nothing fancy just good old fashioned bread, you see people queueing to buy it, wish it could be the same here.

Just trying to make a point that Brummie land is lucky to have these bakeries as many seems to have gone over the years and it would be nice to have some here.

I'm old enough to remember brum in the late 50's/early 60's and it was a dump. Playgrounds were often old bomb sites from WW2 (gooink down the bombers) with row after row of slums and thick fog/smog. Over the years its improved beyond all recognition and is a city that should be talked about more, wonderful parks, shops, great food from the four corners of the earth etc. We here folk saying how good Liverpool/Manchester/London are but brummies stay quiet, perhaps its in our nature I don't know. I was born in brum, Welsh ancestry and traveled the world and know that brum is a great city and the people are just about the friendliest I've ever come across. I've got properties I rent out up there and must make time to visit more than the one or two days a year I have done for the last decade or more.

One thing I still miss is good curry

After my time I think, I rent out a house just off Wake Green Road and lived in Moseley for some years but the name rings no bells, thank you anyway.

Anyone here remember http://www.druckers.co.uk/ ? They had a shop in Moseley and forty years ago it was one of the very few high quality 'cake shops' in brum where you could also sit and eat plus drink very good coffee
