“Australia has moved ahead of Canada to become the sixth biggest music market in the world.

According to International Federation of the Phonographic Industry's (IFPI) figures released this week, Australian sales were up 5.7% to US $475.2 million last year. Comparatively, ARIA figures released in late February reported that the Australian music industry was worth US$411.7 million (A$382.7 million) after a 0.34% drop.

Global figures in the IFPI 2012 edition of The Recording Industry in Numbers showed that the decline in sales has slowed. It fell 3% to a value of $16.6 billion in 2011. Physical format sales dropped 8.7% to $10.2 billion while global digital sales grew by 8% to cross the $5 billion mark for the first time to post $5.23 billion. Digital sales now make up 31% of recorded music revenue, up from 29% the year before. The United States remains the market leader. Its revenue fell just 0.1% last year (after three years of double digit drops) to $4,372.9 million, with digital accounting for 51% for the first time.

Japan remained at #2, although revenues tumbled by 7% to $4,087.7 million as its digital sales declined. Germany remained at #3 with total sales of $1,473.7 million (a drop of just 0.2%). The UK followed with $1,433.7 million after a drop of 3.1% and France with $1,002.2 million which was a descent of 3.7%. After Australia came Canada (up 2.6% to $434.0 million), Brazil (8.8% rise to $262.6 million), Netherlands (down 12.1% to $240.2 million) and Italy at #10.

The 2012 IFPI figures showed that performance revenue rose 4.9% to $905 million. Synchronisation, added in the report for the first time, grew 5.7% in 2011 to $342 million — now accounting for 2% of all global recorded music sales.”

Not my country dropping down 1 spot. Since I can speak Japanese, maybe I should launch a music career in Japan
