24 Hour - Email support ?

I don't use my phone for browsing the internet much (just the odd Wikipedia now and then)

BUT - it's important that my emails are constantly updated...

..how much useage would I need to keep my phone on an internet connection 24/7 so that I could read emails as soon as they come in ?

Next to nothing, to be honest. You'd probably want to go to 500MB allowance to give yourself some leeway, but unless you receive an exuberant number of emails, the amount of data usage you'll need is fairly insignificant.
