I am thinking of buying a net minidisc recorder. If I put in a conventionally recorded minidisc (ie analogue via phono leads) and hook up to a PC via the supplied software, will the computer "see" these files and allow me to transfer them to the hard drive for editing/transfer purposes. Many thanks for anyone who can offer advice.

The software that is supplied with the Sony NetMD recorders is called SonicStage and you can only transfer back to the hard drive files that were created and transferred to the NetMD using the software, a process known as checking out and checking in. Hope this helps.

not if you use nero image writer (if you have mp3s), and netmd simple burner! Ok, only can record at lp2 or lp4, but at least you dont have the check in/out restrictions!

If the MD recorder is a Hi-MD recorder it is possible to transfer the files to the PC's hard drive. There are restrictions that appear to make this impossible for digital recordings and for recordings made on standard MD recorders. Also, Sony have just released software that facilitates the movement of PCM (uncompressed) Hi-MD recordings to hard disk (for conversion to WAV format). There is also one independent software package that attempts this too.

As ever, www.minidisc.org is a good source of information.

the short answer is no.
The rules are different for the Hi-MD recorder though
it allows you to transfer some recordings to the pc

Simpler question (as I'm also considering one of these)

If you RECORD something yourself to MD - through Line In, ie analogue - can you then transfer it to PC ???

I record my band's gigs and need to get them to the PC - currently I have to play the MD into the LINE In on my PC - not the best method, especially as I have on old soundcard.

(There's an irony there I think - certainly on the old MDs, it will work for illegal copying of CDs, but not for legal copying the other way !!!)

The best source of answers is - http://www.minidisc.org/
as Snubtray said.

NetMD prevents any audio data from coming out of the machine. This is due to the heavy anti copying measures imposed by sony.

HiMD has taken into account that some people might want to use their minidisc to record things live and then be able to transfer the data onto a PC.

You can record analogue sources to ATRAC or PCM (uncompressed) and upload thgese to a PC

from: http://www.minidisc.org/hi-md_faq.html#_q88

# Hi-MD equipment can record audio to Hi-MD media in uncompressed PCM (16bits/44.1khz, i.e. CD format) as well as in Sony's ATRAC3plus encoding at 256kbps ("Hi-SP") and 64kbps ("Hi-LP").
# Hi-MD recorders can be used directly as USB connected data drives on any PC supporting USB storage devices (no additional drivers needed).
# Microphone and line input (i.e. analog source) recordings made on Hi-MD equipment can be uploaded at high-speed to Windows PCs via SonicStage (Sony's copyright-protecting audio transfer software).

Not quite, the stupid system is all part of stopping you making digital copies of the digital copies, and only allowing you to copy originals.
