I was stumbling across lots of old 90s pop songs on youtube and came across this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyhrYis509A&ob=av2e

I thought that the song was meant to be a joke. I can't believe so many people online listen to it seriously. It's approaching 45 million views now. I mean really?? It was embarresing then. But it appears to have quite a "legacy" going.

Justin Biebers also has billions of views... doesn't mean it's any good.

Barbie Girl is a classic, and it's a common choice of song at school/college/university parties now.

As bad as people might thing the song is, it was a MASSIVE hit, and makes a lot of people feel nostalgic.

And although lyrically the song is obviously very questionable, musically I've always found it very catchy. With different lyrics it would've been a well-received pop song imo.

^^^ Barbie Girl was huge. It sold over a million copies in the UK. It was in the top 40 for like a year.

I loved Aqua's run of singles during that time, first was Barbie Girl, then Doctor Jones, and then they released the much more mature Turn Back Time. All 3 singles were number ones in the UK.

Ah I loved the 90's.

It was predictably like most pop music... Big hit at the time, cheesy and doesnt age well. You don't hear it played anywhere now and even if it was... It'll be a moment where people are taking the piss out of how bad it was.

Guess you don't go out clubbing much then. I hear it quite a lot in the classic pop rooms.

The song was a worldwide #1, and was influential (particularly Nicki Minaj's new album), so 43M views is expected.

I thought you were taking the mick about this! Has she actually drawn inspiration from this or are you just connecting both styles?

If Barbie girl was played in any club... People would walk straight out. Influenced Nicki minaj? So now we know who's to blame. It hasn't aged well at all... Its just a joke of a song.

Both. She's quoted the song a few times, definitely on her mixtapes. And the new album has a huge late 90s Euro-pop influence.

Out of interest, how old are you?

I was a child at the time it came out, and the people in my age group (who are now the ones going clubbing the most) generally look at the song fondly with nostalgia. Yes, in a gimmicky kind of way.

If it came on at a party or a club I'm sure most people would be up dancing

If that's classed as a great pop song, I'd hate to think what the rest of pop is like.

I'm surprised it doesn't have more views to be honest, people often forget the success of this song it seriously was a global phenomenon, I believe it also sold by the shed-load in places such as Russia, China, India, Brazil and Japan

I've been clubbing... But never entered these "cheese" rooms and I'm glad I haven't. It must be full of idiots with no taste in music.

It's an under-rated feminist classic, telling the tragic plight of some women who think they have to do exactly as they are told to get a man.

It also deals with the 'never-never' culture, waxing about 'Life in plastic, it's fantastic'.

Boy, that song has so many levels. Well, two at least.

Well for fact it was written as tongue-in-cheek commentary on materialism.

Barbie Girl is a legendary song. It comes on around christmas time and sometimes in summer in some clubs I've been out to. People get quite into it.

I dare say those doubting the popularity of the song weren't around when it broke out, or don't have any sense of fun about them what so ever. it's one of those "Bet you won't dance to this" tracks they play, where everyone does dance to it, much ilke they do with "Everybody get up" by Five or "Bob the builder" which is actually a really decent club instrumental. Some amazing deep bass on it.
