As for the TV shows you are starting to see more android phones but with tablets I'll agree that you see more ipads. But what does that tell us???”

but your kids and wife are likely to be of a different generation than someones mother, especially an elderly mother who didn't have computers when they were at school. give it a few years and you'll be looking at the latest gadget yourself with a confused loook
whilst you might not see what's complex, you have to consider it from the point of others who aren't so familiar with these things
the ipad and iphone being the predominant devices on tv shows, in particular american shows can show people how these items work, without them ever having seeing one. so subconsciously if they then get the opportunity to use one, along with the intuitive nature of the system, people get to grips with them much quicker
for example, with your mother, did you leave the device with her to figure out how it works on her own, or did you show her how it worked? the people i refer to struggled on their own with android, but found iphone/ipad intuitive to use without instructions. even the first iphone had no instructions in the box, and people didn't have any previous experience with touch or smart phones when they used it. android might be the same, but it came along a year or two later, and perhaps another year or two after that when it became more mainstream into the homes of people who would have otherwise stuck with a basic phone
