Anyone remember these? They had a fair few hits and they won a Brit Award too. Apparently Denise is on The Voice this week too

i liked them for a while when i was a kid. i remember they started to flop and lost their house and cars. then they signed a new deal with epic and moved to the us where they made another two flop albums.

bizarrely they were still recording music in 2001 and in total delivered 4 flop records. who was funding these releases?

having said that, denise was a good vocalist and judging by recent videos posted she can still sing. i hope it goes well for her with the voice.

The 2nd flop album "Shine" from 1991 is outstanding and should've brought them more success, Some Kind of Magic, Shine, Save A Place, The Start of Forever, Come To Me (For Love)....lush

- the follow-up Heart & Soul from 94 is good too...."When You Get Home", "The Writing on the Wall" are 2 highlights from that one

BTW Deniece has ended her "Denise" page on FB and started a "Deniece" - her Five Star spelling....suggests she does well on The Voice??

i have no idea, but i don't remember her ever spelling her name as deniece. now i cant say i listened to all their flop material, but i remember `treat me like a lady`, `hot love, `i give, you give` and `shine`. remember when they went for a `raunchier` new image for `rock the world`?

Is it right that "the slightest touch" written was about a vibrator?

I have a vivid memory of going into a newsagents and seeing the front cover of Number 1 magazine - Deniece had this huge blonde curly beehive, Doris looked like Janet and Lorraine had a slicked back "do" - later extensions in the Another Weekend vid....I was shocked - but liked it. A shame (again) it wasn't more of a success - the Rock The World album is great.
Have all my magazine clippings/interviews in 3 scrapbooks in the attic - should dig them out

oh dear, that was a career low. however, there was more embarrassment to come when stedman got arrested for `public indecency` in a toilet.

That was the lowest point for me - it's like the press decided they needed to be taken down....they even took a picture of a "bailiff" climbing their gates....when all they did was move house! Sure, they couldn't afford to live there anymore but it wasn't THAT bad.

but he did plead guilt though and to be honest i had my suspicions about him. they were dubbed the british jacksons, when really they were more on par with bros. the press built then up and knocked them down. however, i don't think they helped themselves.

The studio and bankruptcy stuff wasn't quite how the video made out.

The studio was built as a seperate business venture with the intention of renting it out for use. It was a business that failed. Around that time they moved house, maybe for financial reasons (possibly due to the studio investment?), maybe 'cause they wanted a new house, maybe a bit of both... only they know. This combination of them moving house and the studio business failing led the press to put two and two together to equal five and conclude Five Star were bankrupt. It was huge news, to the point where tabloids were getting people to pretend to be bailiffs. It was a great story because of the much publicised opulance they were living in but the truth of their 'fall' wasn't quite as exciting as it needed to be, so it was embelished.

Ironically a few years later after going to the US they did actually become bankrupt. Well all the members because Buster didn't want it declared in the Five Star name.

To be honest I think the British Jacksons does them a disservice. Of course they never had the highs or the worldwide recognition/acclaim but they never had the lows either. In my opinion as a collective they were generally more talented and creative and consistant than the Jacksons... who were a mixed bag of members and who's output ranged from brilliant to embarrassing... particularly in the eighties. Five Star were all good performers who were all involved in their musical output which was on the whole pretty consistant (despite a few bad judgements of image). The budget Jackson comparison means they get overlooked as the talented group of kids and really good popstars they were in their own right.

Strangly despite being more of a Pop with a capital P person when it comes to their big albums I actually prefer their more UK R&B-esque debut album than their more pop orientated follow-ups. It was sort of Loose Ends-esque. But "System Addict" became THE hit of the album which took them down that more pop route.

or they were consistent, without a doubt. they consistently flopped in the album chart after 1988.

Love them! been a fan since I was 8 (1985)

Seen them live on the Crunchie Tour 86, and Ultrabrite Tour 87, saw them in 2003 I think it was too

Their first 2 albums Luxury of Life and Silk and Steel have been reissued and Between the Lines and Rock The World are coming next month

Even better news is that they've reformed with the full line up this time and are playing Rewind in July

They were clearly influenced by Michael Jackson, but I think I'm right in saying that their song Rock My World was released before his You Rock My World. Different song of course.

Yeah that as well I suppose.

Though interest in when and how they flopped left me years ago (as much as I know it's an obsession round these parts when it comes to pop music) I was more giving my assessment of their output. I think even during those periods their output was still pretty good. In fact a couple of their 'flops' are more enjoyable than some of their bigger albums.
