I've been a Kate Bush fan for years and although I'm aware there's an appreciation thread for her, I'd like to focus on her songs. Which ones really stand out for you? If I had a top ten, it would go something like this:

1. Wuthering Heights
2. Hounds of Love
3. Experiment IV
4. Babooshka
5. Hammer Horror
6. In Search of Peter Pan
7. Under the Ivy
8. A Coral Room
9. The Man With the Child in His Eyes
10. Deeper Understanding

I'd love to see your lists!

She's got so many great songs it's virtually impossible to narrow it down to a few favourites without forgetting about some real gems.

I feel like breaking out my DVD of her Hammersmith concert due to this thread.

I was going to put Blow Away but I was trying to narrow it down (didn't really work towards the end though haha)

Wuthering Heights
Moments of Pleasure
Wild Man
How to be Invisible
Eat the Music
The Sensual World
This Woman's Work
Deeper Understanding
Rocket's Tail
Constellation of the Heart
Hounds of Love
Running Up That Hill
Burning Bridge
Under the Ivy
And Dream of Sheep
Suspended in Gaffa
Army Dreamers
Babooshka
The Man With The Child In His Eyes
Them Heavy People

I can still remember her performing 'Running Up That Hill' on 'Wogan' back in 1985 when she made her 'comeback' with 'Hounds of Love' and being completely blown away. She was pretty much ubiquitous for the next couple of years which represented the pinnacle of her success. Before that, I was only vaguely aware of her as the singer of 'Wuthering Heights' - she became my favourite female artist. She really is without equal.

I have nothing but respect and admiration for Kate Bush. Incredibly talented and a high degree of integrity, both professionally and personally. In my opinion she's the most outstanding female artist in the world today.

Of her most recent stuff I'd say these were my favourites:

Snowed in at Wheeler Street
Nocturn
Aerial
50 Words for Snow
Wild Man
A Coral Room
Sunset

Wonderful thread, congratulations OP. I'm 23 but was introduced to her music by my uncle at a young age, who saw her on tour and has a healthy obsession with her. It's really hard to narrow down my favourite songs, but if I had to pick 10 I think it would go something like this.

In Search Of Peter Pan
Room For The Life
Moments Of Pleasure
The Big Sky
Sat In Your Lap
Moving
Them Heavy People
Wow
Cloudbusting
Misty

And I'm still missing out so many amazing songs.

As much as I love Madonna and Tori Amos, Kate Bush comes very close too - My favorites so far:

Wuthering Heights
Army Dreamers
King of Mountain
Pi
Running Up that Hill
Wild Man
Experiment IV
The Wedding list
Sat In Your Lap
Song of Salomon
Rubberband Girl
The Sensual World
Woman's Work
Deeper Understanding
Don't Give Up (ok, it's predominantly a peter Gabriel song but Kate Bush's vocal contribution rocks the song for me)

I'm not really a Kate Bush fan, but for a song so short, "The Man With The Child In His Eyes" is too beautiful for words. I also liked the updated version/remix of "Wuthering Heights" which appeared on a greatest hits album of hers from the late 80s/early 90s -- even if the original was great too.

I'm not keen on her later stuff but love the beginning up to The Whole Story era. Sorry to be so predictable, but my favourite is Wuthering Heights (both versions, as referenced by summer redux above). I like all the singles on TWS, with Wow being a particular fave (and sadly underrated, too, IMHO) and in terms of album tracks I really like Them Heavy People and ALL the songs on The Dreaming. By the time we get to Hounds Of Love I'm unfortunately not fussed with all the folksy, samey-sounding stuff on Side 2.

Under The Ivy - Literally tattooed on my skin
Out Of The Storm
The Kick Inside
Breathing
50 Words For Snow
Ran Tan Waltz
Houdini
Moments Of Pleasure
This Woman's Work
Coffee Homeground
A Coral Room
Snowflake
Pull Out The Pin
All We Ever Look For
Hammer Horror
and Dream Of Sheep
Sunset

Tori Amos and Kate Bush are in my blood - adore them!

Wow is vastly underrated. A menacing ode to failing Thespians with references to 70's cop shows and anal sex - and to make it a lead single and a hit at that, well, it just doesn't get any better.

I've never been a huge fan of HOL, whilst I adore the singles RUTH and HOL, I was never overly keen on the rest of the album, especially The Ninth Wave and her plunge into pure folk (like Jig of Life) has never done much for me.

I'm a little at odds with KB at the moment. Will we ever see a perfectly crafted pop song from her ever again? I think it's highly unlikely and whilst I'm delighted she has found a new song-writing vigour in recent years, her current musical musings do make me yearn for a return to something more immediate...but then I listen to some of the more immediate offerings from Aerial and I think maybe her more 'mature' phase is for the best.

Anyway, to answer the OP question, favourite songs are anything released from the Never For Ever/Single File era.

Anal sex in Wow?

anyway one of the things that has always amazed me about Kate is just how young she was at the beginning, which is easy to forget - wasn't she about 19 at the time of Wuthering Heights? - and within that, the sheer depth and breadth of imagination and intellect of the themes she was writing songs on, and the gamut of forms and often almost impenetrable references that made up her lyrics. As not-so-subtly sent-up in this immortal 'Not The Nine O' Clock News' 'tribute'

I may be a cynic in cynical times but it's hard to imagine a 19-year old today coming along and showing us similar - although, admittedly, unlike in Kate's era the industry is now of course suffocatingly against creativity and originality, so they'd hardly get a look in anyway.

I think you're right for the most part, but there is Laura Marling who is truly unique in terms of her songs and she's very young. Florence Welch is great too. She's a bit older though, in her mid 20s.

I'd love more artists who are like Kate and Tori in terms of intelligence and depth in their songs and artistic integerity.

Wow, Wuthering Heights Symphony In Blue, Don't Push Your Foot On The Heartbreak, Blow Away, Babooshka, Hounds Of Love are amongst my favourites. But the first 2 songs were easily her best for me.

After Hounds I began to lose interest as she never performed live (other than once early on), which is highly unusual for any well known artist. I don't think you can call yourself a true musician/artist unless you can prove that you can do it live as engineers in the studio have many tricks up their sleeve (autotune). Can Kate actually sing - in tune? She either suffers from severe stage fright or she can't be arsed.

Madonna, Kate Bush, Prince....the holy trinity that rule my life tbh

Kate Bush my dad had on cassettes, vinyl and CD (The WHole Story) so had her on blast when i was a wee lad

Ever since i have got the majority of her albums bar Lionheart and Red Shoes thus far. Dificult to select songs overall let alone single releases too...but will narrow down a top 10

Running Up The Hill
The Ninth Wave (that is a song IMO...it is a song of lots of songs! in Hounds Of Love)
get out of my house (from The Dreaming)
The wedding List (Never For Ever)
The Big Sky
Nocturn (Aerial)
The Big Sky (HOL)
Sat In Your Lap (The Dreaming)
Suspended In gaffa (The Dreaming)
Breathing (Never For Ever)

I think that if i could make a mini album of my fave Bush songs would narrow it down

I see what you mean but I'm not sure she's unique. Her music roots in the folk genre but perhaps her sound is more experimental than your traditional acoustic/folk average song. What made Kate unique at the time is that she was just being Kate. She's just going with what she felt in terms of her image the aesthetic of her videos and there's no need to explain why and how she did. As much as I really like Florence, I think that's what lacking in her aesthetic. It is very sophisticated but too obvious and now part of the package. When with Kate it felt like it was part of the process.

You should definitely give The Red Shoes a try ! Alot of fans and critics put it down as not one of her best (along with Lionheart) but it has some fantastic songs on it. Atleast youtube The Red Shoes (the song), it's probably one of the last mad uptempo pop songs we've got from Kate.

I still wonder whether she ever bettered her first album - The Kick Inside was just awesomely brilliant and I still love playing it all through to this day. So do others agree or disagree?

I will it is weird as it alwas has a mental block with me. It is funny because i always tend to find the most unappreciated some of the best really in an artists back catalogue really.

Will definitely check it out

This, pretty much. I was lucky to be around at the time when she was breaking into the charts, Wuthering Heights came out when I was eight in 1978 and I was instantly captivated. I've been a fan of hers ever since.
I think my favourite song of hers is probably Army Dreamers with The Man With The Child In His Eyes a close second, then her Peter Gabriel collaboration Don't Give Up, or Running Up That Hill, would be third. I also love her later stuff and I think her remixed album is absolute genius. Unlike a lot of people, I love the new version of Rubberband Girl.

Can Kate actually sing - in tune? She either suffers from severe stage fright or she can't be arsed.
Yes she can sing and in tune. She hasn't toured since a sound engineer was killed during one of her earlier shows. I don't think her not performing live on tour has any detrimental affect on her songwriting or singing ability to be perfectly honest. There are also plenty of examples of her singing on TV shows etc which used to be done live in the 70s and 80s (outside of Top of the Pops that is).
