New to MiniDisc....Please HELP!!!!!!!!!
I'm considering treating myself to a minidisc for Crimbo. What i need is a minidisc that can record vinyl from my hi-fi, and maybe even playback via the hi-fi also. My hi-fi is about 15 years old, its a stacking system, (top of the range back then and still as good today as when i bought it), and i've been wondering if its possible to record vinyl and achieve playback via the hi-fi then how do i hook it up, what cables do i need to get the functionality i require.
Thank you in advance to anyone who might possibly be able to help me out here. Thanks guys!!! Robert. |

Easiest way is to image it's a tape recorder, and plug it in as one.
Assuming your hi fi has tape in / out sockets. Or if you prefer, you could use AUX for playback, and piggy-back it onto the tape out - then you could still have your cassette attached. The only time that using a mini-disc is different to a cassette player is if you want to record digitally - and there's no point from vinyl, even if you did have the appropriate stuff to make it work ! You don;t get that nasty tape hiss with minidiscs
and you can use the LP formats to fit hours onto a single disc (yes you sacrifice quality) |

http://www.minidisc.org/ is a good resource for MD information. There is a new format, Hi-MD, that offers greater storage capacity, but as far as I am aware there are no Hi-MD decks available yet. Portable MD players can be plugged into hi-fi systems and give excellent sound as well as recording.
When I bought my Sony deck at Richer Sounds, they tried to persuade me to buy a CD recorder as an alternative. That didn't suit my needs, but you might want to consider that if all you want to do is transfer LPs to a digital format. |

Sorry, I was refering to connecting up and using a mini-disk.Of course, for quality, it wipes the floor with cassette in almost all situations*. And direct access etc is nice. Tim.C *And I said ALMOST because, yes, a 'top notch' casstte will sound better than a mini-disc - but I'm guessing that not many people own a Uher, so we can safely assume MD will be best
